Fifth Test wash-up: Every player rated

Australia legend Mike Hussey and former England skipper Michael Vaughan review the performances of the respective XIs

Australia player ratings: Mike Hussey

DAVID WARNER – 6.5/10

Warner batted well and carried on from his century in Melbourne. But on a great batting track he’d be disappointed he didn’t go on with it like some of his teammates.

Warner anchors Aussies with gritty fifty

CAMERON BANCROFT – 2/10

Unfortunately recorded his first duck in Test cricket but hopefully the selectors show some faith in him and pick him for South Africa. He will have learnt a lot about international cricket in this series and it will hold him in good stead for the rest of his career.

Hussey selects his Aussie Test squad for SA

USMAN KHAWAJA – 9.5/10

Outstanding innings. Uz showed his class and silenced some doubters with a big hundred on a pitch that offered plenty for the spinners, handling the turning ball well. His reaction when he reached three figures showed how much it means to him and no doubt it would have been a huge relief.

Khawaja's brilliant maiden Ashes century

STEVE SMITH – 7.5/10

A rare failure for Steve Smith, just the 83! All jokes aside, he again looked in total control and it was a surprise when he got out to Moeen Ali. He looked so disappointed walking off the SCG as a record-breaking hundred beckoned. It was an amazing series from the skipper and he’s set to go down as one of Australia’s greats.

Summer of Smith continues with SCG fifty

SHAUN MARSH – 9.5/10

He capped off a superb series with an innings overflowing with class that once again provided the backbone of Australia’s innings. If he stays fit, I don’t see why he can’t continue playing in the Baggy Green for a few years to come.

Shaun Marsh adds second Ashes century

MITCHELL MARSH – 8.5/10

After a scratchy start against leg-spinner Mason Crane, Mitch Marsh unleashed his full array of powerful shots in bringing up his second century of the series. You can definitely see he’s improved his technique in his time away from the game through injury. It was great for him to be out there with his brother Shaun, but it was hilarious to see them celebrate mid-pitch while completing the second run!

Mitchell Marsh scores his second Ashes century

TIM PAINE – 7/10

Again, a solid, tidy performance with the gloves in taking four catches in the first innings. He chipped in with handy runs and played his part beautifully.

MITCHELL STARC – 7/10

Showed how important he is to the team with three crucial wickets, including Root and Malan in the first innings. He still looked to be troubled by that heel injury and will be interesting to see how he is used in the Gillette ODI Series.

PAT CUMMINS – 9.5/10

Another sensational display with the ball from Patty in picking up eight wickets and the player of the match award. It's a great sign for Australia that he got through all five Test matches and as the leading wicket-taker to boot. I can’t wait to see how he goes in South Africa!

Cummins bags eight, player-of-the-match award

JOSH HAZLEWOOD – 7.5/10

The workhorse of Australia’s attack probed again all Test match with that immaculate line and length. He finished the series with 21 wickets and was consistently the best bowler in the summer for Australia.

NATHAN LYON – 8/10

He was as good as ever on a pitch that offered plenty of assistance to the spinners as the Test wore on. The ball to dismiss Alastair Cook with in the second innings was an absolute beauty and I bet he’ll be looking forward to leading the team song tonight!

England player ratings: Michael Vaughan

ALASTAIR COOK – 4/10

He got a few in the first innings but he just looked tired. And there’s no surprise there after 244 not out in Melbourne.

Cook passes the 12,000 Test run milestone

MARK STONEMAN – 2/10

He’s really struggling. It looks like Australia’s quicks peppering him with the short stuff from the Perth Test onwards has really affected him.

JAMES VINCE – 4/10

I think England have to stick with him – you got to give these guys the New Zealand series. There’ll be no sleep for him tonight because I couldn’t state case for him in court to make sure he is on that flight. If a judge asked me why, I haven’t got a case for him. He looks like he can play – give him two more games.

JOE ROOT – 8/10

I thought he’s been good this time. I liked the way he batted and I was impressed with some of his tactics in the field. He’s just not had the resources to work with in the bowling department.

Root posts defiant fifty as England fight at the SCG

DAWID MALAN – 6/10

He didn’t get a huge amount of runs but I just think he’s got that determination, courage and desperation to be out there a long time. That’s what I like to see in a player.

JONNY BAIRSTOW – 7/10

He was brilliant behind the stumps, he’s got better and better. I liked the way he batted in the second innings – I didn’t like his ego taking over in the first with the nightwatchman decision. That was a massive momentum shift in the game.

MOEEN ALI – 3/10

He’s just doing nothing. I’m being kind with my mark here. He’s delivering the same technical ability with bat and ball and expecting different results. He’s not been willing to change or try anything different. It's been a really disappointing tour for him.

Mr Cricket on the GOAT v Moeen Ali

TOM CURRAN – 6/10

I like him. He needs a bit more pace but I really like his attitude and also his energy when he bats at the crease. With the ball, he just needs a bit of extra pace.

STUART BROAD – 4/10

He’s struggled this week. Playing five matches in these conditions on these pitches for a seamer is very difficult. But I liked his batting in the first innings – that was entertaining.

MASON CRANE – 6/10

I liked him. I don’t think he’s quite ready but I think England have got someone they can work with. He deserved more than a one-fer. But England need to find a spinner for overseas if not, they’re going to get battered wherever they go.

JAMES ANDERSON – 9/10

He was high-class as ever. He just not been supported. Taking 17 wickets at 27 – he’s a different league to everyone else.
