Get up to speed on Australia's upcoming two-Test series against Bangladesh

When is it?

27-31 August First Test, Dhaka

4-8 September Second Test, Chittagong

Who's playing?

Australia squad: Steve Smith (c), David Warner (vc), Ashton Agar, Jackson Bird, Hilton Cartwright, Pat Cummins, Peter Handscomb, Josh Hazlewood, Usman Khawaja, Nathan Lyon, Glenn Maxwell, Matthew Renshaw, Mitchell Swepson, Matthew Wade.

Bangladesh squad: Mushfiqur Rahim (c), Tamim Iqbal, Soumya Sarkar, Imrul Kayes, Shakib Al Hasan, Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Sabbir Rahman, Nasir Hossain, Liton Das, Taskin Ahmed, Shafiul Islam, Mustafizur Rahman, Taijul Islam, Mominul Haque.

Stephen O'Keefe and Shaun Marsh are two major omissions from Australia's last Test against India, while Mitchell Starc and James Pattinson are both missing the series due to injury. Ashton Agar is expected to return to partner Nathan Lyon in a two-pronged spin attack. Usman Khawaja looks poised for another crack in subcontinental conditions after riding the bench in India.

Bangladesh on the other have all their big guns available; diminutive wicketkeeper Mushfiqur Rahim is their fearless leader, Shakib al Hasan is the best allrounder in the world per the ICC rankings and teenage off-spinner Mehedi Hasan could prove a handful on turning tracks.

Australia haven't played Bangladesh in a while, have they?

It's been 11 years since Australia last played a Test in Bangladesh, a densely populated, flood-prone, cricket-mad country that's surrounded by India and the Bay of Bengal. When they last visited Bangladesh for a Test series, Shane Warne still led the attack and Ricky Ponting was skipper. Thanks to an innings Adam Gilchrist rates as his finest Test knock and a double-century Jason Gillespie rates as the finest Test knock, Australia prevailed 2-0. But the Tigers have come a long way since then. They made the knockout stages of the 2015 World Cup and this year's Champions Trophy, and knocked over England in a Test match last year. Australian fans be warned; Bangladesh are no easy-beats.

What's happened since Australia's Test series defeat in India?

Australia's sodden Champions Trophy campaign ended in disappointment in June as they lost their only match that wasn't washed out. A bitter pay dispute dominated the Australian cricket landscape in the following months, while concerns over safety for this two-Test tour put the trip in jeopardy. With the industrial battle resolved and Australia receiving head-of-state levels of security, Steve Smith's side are ready to take on a rising power in world cricket.

What's at stake for Australia?

Aside from the potential ICC rankings consequences, the series looms as a final chance for Australia players to impress in the international arena before the Ashes. While the three JLT Sheffield Shield rounds before November's first Test at the Gabba will be pivotal in terms of selection, runs and wickets in challenging subcontinent conditions could play a big role for a number of players to cement their spots.
