Australia’s coaches to study in the United States

A host of elite and up-and-coming Australian coaches are set to study the best in the US

A group of Australia’s elite and up-and-coming coaches including Justin Langer and Ryan Harris are set to head to the United States in June as part of a study tour.

The tour will give the group the chance to experience a variety of elite sports, colleges and media institutions, including the San Francisco Giants, ESPN, Google, Apple, Facebook and high profile universities.

There, they will examine what it takes to create a culture of excellence.

Joining Langer and Harris on the tour will be Australian fielding and batting coach Greg Blewett, Commonwealth Bank Southern Stars coach Matthew Mott, Western Australian bowling coach Adam Griffith, Queensland coach Phil Jaques, Australian assistant Graeme Hick and Melbourne Stars skipper David Hussey.

Brad Hodge and Mike Hussey were not available for the tour, due to Caribbean Premier League commitments.

Cricket Australia’s Executive General Manager Team Performance Pat Howard said it was important to invest in the professional development of current elite coaches as well as those coming through the pathway system.

"This program represents a significant piece of the overall Elite Coach Program in place for the year,” Howard said.

"All those selected for this tour are currently working across Australian cricket and have been identified as future national coaches.

"It’s about seeing what works well in other elite environments. This trip provides a great opportunity to look outside the box and expand our thinking in a number of areas."

Guest hosts and speakers on the trip will include David Epstein, author of The Sports Gene, Professor Wade Gilbert from California State University and Major League Team coaching panels.

Howard said plans were in place to organise further study tours in 2017, with a particular focus on female programs.
