Warne picks his greatest ODI XI

Shane Warne names Allan Border as captain of his best Australia ODI side from the past 25 years

Shane Warne has selected Allan Border as captain of his greatest Australian one-day international team of the past 25 years, but there was no room for multiple World Cup winners Steve Waugh and Matthew Hayden.

In an unenviably difficult task, Warne sifted through the best players from a golden generation of Australian ODI cricket that included three consecutive World Cups from 1999 to 2007.

Writing on his Facebook page, Warne said the No.4 position in his side created the most angst and nominated Damien Martyn, Darren Lehmann and Michael Clarke as players who were all unlucky to miss out.

The No.4 spot went to Michael Hussey, who was squeezed in between dual World Cup winning captain Ricky Ponting at No.3 and 1987 Cup winning skipper Border at No.5.

Adam Gilchrist and Mark Waugh were selected as openers, while Michael Bevan - known as the 'Pyjama Picasso' for his mastery of the limited overs game in the late 1990s and early 2000s - was named at No.6.

Andrew Symonds is the allrounder in the side at No.7, along with a bowling attack of Warne, Glenn McGrath, Brett Lee and Mitchell Johnson.

Hayden, Steve Waugh and Dean Jones were the most notable omissions having been mainstays in Australia's dominant 50-over sides over the past 25 years.

Waugh, who was part of Border's 1987 World Cup winning side and captained Australia to victory in 1999, averaged a touch under 33 with the bat in 325 ODI matches and also took 195 career wickets.

Hayden was a late-comer to ODI cricket, securing a regular place in the early 2000s and ending his career with 10 ODI centuries, an impressive average of 43.80 and two World Cup winners medals.

Jones was also a part of the 1987 side and was a star of Australia's ODI sides of the late 1980s and early 1990s, finishing his career with an average of 44.61 from 164 matches.

But as Warne himself pointed out ...
