Indigenous women seal first tour win

Fuller stars in thrilling T20 win over Delhi

Australia's national Indigenous women's team have opened their account on the historic tour of India with a three-wicket win against Delhi.

Victoria's Natalie Plane led the way with the ball to claim 3-19 as the home side were skittled for 113 in the T20 encounter. Sally Moylan and team captain Ashleigh Gardner were the other bowlers to cause serious problems as both claimed 2-16 on the day.

Chasing 114 for victory, young gun Carly Fuller produced a fine knock of 46 at the top of the order to steer the side across the line in the second outing on the 10-day tour.

Gardner, who displayed her ability for the Sydney Sixers during the Women's Big Bash League, chipped in with 20, before Samara Williams finished the job with four balls to spare.

Australia's next challenge will come against Mumbai in a 50-over clash on Thursday, followed by a T20 double-header against the same opposition on Saturday to bring the tour to a close.

The squad of 14, coached by Commonwealth Bank Southern Stars legend Shelley Nitschke, will also go beyond the cricket pitch to visit the Taj Mahal and Australian High Commission in Delhi, as well as working with the Magic Bus organisation to support disadvantaged children through sport.

The tour to India is the first of its kind, with selection for the team based on performances at February's National Indigenous Championships and at a club level.

"A group of Indigenous women from across Australia coming together to play overseas and represent Indigenous culture is significant, and something we're all really proud to be a part of," Gardner said on the eve of the tour.

"Each of us is representing our people back home and I'm excited about the opportunity to captain the side.

"From a cricket perspective, playing in Indian conditions is one of cricket's biggest challenges; it will be a big test for us and really help our development individually and as a squad."
