Analyse Stat: West Indies v Australia

A snapshot of the numbers that matter leading into the first West Indies-Australia Test in Dominica

The two-match series between Australia and West Indies will see the 50th Test played between the two sides in the Caribbean, with the tourists holding a narrow advantage (currently 19 wins, 14 losses, 15 draws).

Those clashes date back 60 years, to March 1955, when the likes of Harvey, Morris, Miller and Lindwall took on a West Indies side famously led by ‘Three Ws’ – Sir Everton Weekes, Sir Clyde Walcott, and the man whose name graces the trophy these two sides contest, Sir Frank Worrell.

Below we’ve provided a basic cheat sheet for this Australia–West Indies series, with all the approaching milestones as well as the key stats highlighting the stars of this fierce cricketing rivalry.

Milestones looming

Australia speedster Mitchell Johnson needs nine wickets to overtake his bowling coach, Craig McDermott (291 Test wickets) and jump into fifth place on Australia’s list of leading Test wicket-takers. At 283 wickets, the 300-mark is also on the horizon, though more realistically an Ashes target for the left-armer.

With 1,868 runs, Johnson is also just 132 runs away from becoming the third Australian (after Richie Benaud and Shane Warne) to complete the 200 wickets – 2,000 runs double.

West Indies captain Denesh Ramdin needs just one dismissal for 200 in Tests. It would make him the third West Indian keeper (behind Jeff Dujon and Ridley Jacobs) and 16th overall to reach the mark.

He looks unlikely to play the first Test, but Peter Siddle is just 27 runs away from 1,000 in Test cricket, and eight wickets from 200.
