Barmy Army reveal new tune for Smith

Famously boisterous England supporter group to taunt Australia captain about India DRS incident this summer

The Barmy Army will use a cheekily-reworked Beatles classic to taunt Australia captain Steve Smith during the Magellan Ashes about his Decision Review System mishap earlier this year.

England's vocal band of travelling supporters - who have famously altered the lyrics of popular music to target the likes of Ricky Ponting and Mitchell Johnson in Ashes battles over the years – have revealed a new song to mock Australia's Test skipper.

Gilly lays down a challenge to Barmy Army

Sung to the tune of The Beatles' 'I Get By With A Little Help From My Friends', the Barmy Army will croon, "What should I do/Should I use a review/Can you stand up and signal to me?" when Smith strides to the crease next week at the Gabba.

Barmy Army organiser Paul Burnham also indicated they have some new material for Smith's deputy David Warner, conceding the tourists might be in need of some support in the series-opener in Brisbane where England haven't won a Test since 1986.

"We have a few new ones for Smith and Warner," Burnham told News Corp Australia.

"We felt his decision to ask for the review by looking up the change rooms deserved a song and that's why we chose 'I Get By With A Little Help From My Friends'.

"But really we are all about getting behind our boys as well because I reckon they might need a bit of help at the 'Gabbatoir'."

Smith caught up in DRS controversy

The reference is to an incident on Australia's Qantas Tour of India that sparked a war of words between the respective nation's cricket boards and prompted an enraged Virat Kohli to all but label Smith a cheat.

At the suggestion of teammate Peter Handscomb, Smith glanced at teammates and coaching staff in the changeroom during the Bengaluru Test while mulling whether to review an lbw decision.

Handscomb took responsibility for the blunder in the aftermath of the highly-charged Test, while Smith promptly apologised and admitted he'd had a "brain fade".

I shouldn't have done that: Smith

Back on home turf, Smith has lauded the impact crowds at the Gabba, where Australia are undefeated through their last 28 Tests, have on his side.

"I love it when the crowd gets into it and gets right behind us," Smith told cricket.com.au recently when asked about the effect of Australian fans.

"I'd say that two moments for me stand out; Mitchell Johnson bowling at the Gabba (during the 2013-14 Ashes).

"The crowd was berserk, I think he took six for not many at one point, the crowd was going (crazy)."

Australia's fans have been encouraged to unify this summer to take on their traditionally more organised counterparts. XXXX Gold is offering prizes to fans who get together to watch the cricket wearing tech-enabled GOLDIE caps, with designated 'Gold Bays' at matches expected to rival Barmy Army areas for sound and colour.

Who smashed the Biggest Six challenge?

The Smith jingle isn't the first time the Barmy Army have rejigged a Beatles song to mock Australia's cricketers.

Ricky Ponting sings Mark Waugh song

Their rendition of 'You all live in a convict colony' to the tune of 'Yellow Submarine' is a staple of the boisterous England fans, while they used a version of 'Yesterday' to goad Ponting during the 2010-11 Ashes ('Yesterday, Ponting's troubles seemed so far away').
