Woakes over Stokes for England blokes

England forced to make one change to their 12-man squad for the second Test in Durham

England have been forced to make one change to their squad for Friday's second Test against Sri Lanka at the Riverside Ground, with allrounder Ben Stokes officially ruled out due to a knee injury.

Fellow allrounder Chris Woakes has been given the call-up to the 12-man squad and will join his national teammates after the first two days of Warwickshire's County Championship clash against Durham.

The full extent of Stokes' injury will become clearer on Tuesday when he is reviewed by a consultant following a scan over the weekend, however The Telegraph in the UK are now reporting that Stokes will undergo surgery and potentially be unavailable until the Test series against Pakistan in July.

The 24-year-old's injury on the final day of the series opener was the only sour note on an otherwise pitch-perfect performance from the home side at Headingley.

England squad: Alastair Cook (c), Moeen Ali, James Anderson, Jonny Bairstow, Jake Ball, Stuart Broad, Nick Compton, Steven Finn, Alex Hales, Joe Root, James Vince, Chris Woakes (12th man to be named).

Meanwhile, injury has forced Sri Lanka to make a change of their own with wicketkeeper-batsman Kusal Perera selected to replace Dhammika Prasad after the seamer injured his shoulder in a tour match against Essex in the lead-up to the first Test.

Perera hasn't played for Sri Lanka since being sent home from Sri Lanka's tour of New Zealand last year after failing an anti-doping Test. He was provisionally suspended by the ICC after an out-of-competition urine sample tested positive for the anabolic steroid 19-Norandrostenedione.

However, the International Cricket Council dropped anti-doping charges against the 25-year-old two weeks ago when the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) accredited laboratory in Qatar had withdrawn its "adverse analytical finding" after an independent review by the ICC said the results from Perera's samples were "not sustainable".

"Kusal will join the team as soon as possible and acclimatise so he can do some serious work with the bat," said Sri Lanka's chief selector Sanath Jayasuriya.
