BBL|05 Team of the Tournament

Strikers, Heat, Thunder and Hurricanes boast multiple representatives in the BBL|05 team of the season

Chris Gayle Melbourne Renegades

260 runs @ 32.50, high score 56, strike rate 155.68, 4 x 18, 6 x 20

His off-field activities were an unwanted distraction and wouldn't have done much for his team, but there's no doubting his on-field ability. There was no greater evidence of it than his last appearance in BBL|05, when Gayle launched a blitzkrieg assault on the Strikers, taking 12 balls to reach fifty.

Luke Wright Melbourne Stars

250 runs @ 41.66, high score 109*, strike rate 137.36, 4 x 31, 6 x 6

The England opener has been one of the Big Bash's most consistent imports, and he continued to deliver for the Melbourne Stars in BBL|05.

There was no finer display of his ability than his match-winning century in the Melbourne Derby in front of more than 80,000 spectators at the MCG.

Chris Lynn Brisbane Heat

378 runs @ 54, high score 101, strike rate 173.39, 4 x 23, 6 x 27

Brisbane's master blaster uses brute strength, amazing hand speed and an exceptional eye to launch deliveries over the rope that other batsmen wouldn't dare dream to attack.

In a season where Lynn hit more sixes than anyone else, his audacious assault against former Test bowler Ben Hilfenhaus at the MCG will live long in the memory. After one sighter, Lynn launched six after six after six after six after six. Five consecutive balls ended up in various bays of the Great Southern Stand as Lynn raced to a 19-ball fifty.

Charged with captaincy this season, Lynn lead from the front and was the BBL's leading run-scorer, more than 100 runs ahead of his nearest rival.

Mike Hussey (c) Sydney Thunder

277 runs @ 55.4, high score 80*, strike rate 135.12, 4 x 25, 6 x 8

To say 'form is temporary, class is permanent' is one of the oldest axioms in professional sports, but for Mr Cricket it seems he has a permanent hold on both qualities.

His farewell season has been a tour de force, with the Sydney Thunder skipper helping shed the franchise's 'easy-beats' tag to lead them into the final four for the very first time.

Travis Head Adelaide Strikers

276 runs @ 46, high score 101*, strike rate 156.81, 4 x 13, 6 x 20

This season has been an outstanding one for Travis Head, culminating in a spot in Australia's Twenty20 squad to play India.

But no knock was more memorable than his effort's on New Year's Eve, when he somehow stole the win for the Strikers with one of the great innings in Big Bash League history. All looked lost for the home side when Alex Ross fell in the 17th over with 55 still to win, but Head launched 27 off one over from Sean Abbott to drag his side back into the game, hitting nine sixes in all, including seven from the final 14 balls he faced, bringing up his century with a six off the final ball of the match.

Tim Paine (wk) Hobart Hurricanes

239 runs @ 34.14, high score 87*, strike rate 117.15, 4 x 18, 8 x 6, eight catches, 1 stumping

After failing to score in the Hurricanes' horror opener against the Sixers, Paine more than made up for it with an unbeaten 87 in his next outing.

He scored another fifty against the Scorchers, while also producing several classics behind the stumps.

Andre Russell Sydney Thunder

175 runs @ 25, high score 46, strike rate 192.3, 4 x 10, 6 x 14; 14 wickets @ 17.21

He put a ball on the roof of Spotless Stadium before the season had even started and 'Dre-Russ' has had people talking ever since, be it for his master blasting with the bat, his ability to make breakthroughs with the ball, or his at times unbelievable efforts in the field.

Adil Rashid Adelaide Strikers

15 wickets @ 13.2, best bowling 3-23, econ 6.38

The England spinner has been a revelation for the Strikers and sits atop the BBL wicket table with 15 wickets from the regular season.

Rashid has been miserly while also regularly collecting big wickets for the Strikers and looms as a major threat in the finals.

Andrew Tye Perth Scorchers

13 wickets @ 15.76, best bowling 3-22, econ 6.79

An excellent season in the orange has resulted in a T20 International call-up for Tye and with good reason. His economy rate of 6.79 is the best by a strike bowler in BBL|05 and he's collected 13 wickets to boot.

Samuel Badree Brisbane Heat

9 wickets @ 22.66, best bowling 5-22, econ 6.37

The West Indian leg-spinner started quietly and didn't pick up a wicket until his fourth game in the teal, but he made up for lost time, soaring to the top of the BBL Official Player Rankings with a series of good performances including a match-winning 5-22 against the Melbourne Stars at the MCG.

Shaun Tait Hobart Hurricanes

10 wickets @ 24.70, best bowling 3-16, econ 7.96

Tait has been bowling thunderbolts for the Hobart Hurricanes this summer, consistently pushing the speed gun above the 145kph barrier.
