Big Billy's call-up no surprise: Khawaja

Queensland teammate praises uncapped quick ahead of possible ODI debut on Friday in Brisbane

Billy Stanlake could be Australia's biggest bolter in more ways than one, but Queensland teammate Usman Khawaja won't be surprised to see him in Australian colours.

At 204cm, Stanlake is set to become one of the tallest players ever to represent Australia having been named in the 14-man squad for the five-match ODI series against Pakistan, starting on Friday at the Gabba.

The 22-year-old quick has played just two first-class matches and four one-day games for Queensland, making him one of the most inexperienced call-ups in Australian history.

Quick Single:Lynn, Stanlake called in to ODI squad

But even though he hasn't played in the Sheffield Shield since December 2015, when back injuries struck him down, Khawaja said he wasn't surprised when he heard Stanlake was in the squad.

"His name was mentioned last year before he got injured, he's just that kind of bowler," Khawaja said.

Stanlake stars with three Sixers wickets

"He's a tall bloke, bowls fast, hits the bat hard and he's very ugly to face.

"The selectors think he's ready and I'm sure that he is and if he gets a chance he'll do really well.

"He's very tall and very fast, and that's two commodities you don't get together a lot of times.

"Either you bowl fast and you're not as tall, or you're tall and you're not as fast. But he can do both which is quite impressive."

Just like Ashton Agar last week, Stanlake admitted he missed the phone call from national selector informing him he'd earned a call-up.

"I got a phone call on Friday morning," Stanlake said. "I actually missed the first one so I had to give him a call back.

"It was very exciting, and I was very shocked at the time.

Khawaja keen to keep form rolling

"I saw it was Trevor Hohns (calling) ... I wasn't too sure what he'd be calling me about. So I gave him a quick call back, and it was very nice news.

"It's definitely a shock to me. It's funny how quick things can happen. It was only a couple of months ago I was returning from injury in club cricket."

Australian coach Darren Lehmann has already stated Stanlake will more than likely play a couple of games in the series, and the resting of Josh Hazlewood for the series opener increases the chances of Stanlake debuting in Brisbane on Friday.

Stanlake won his way into the squad on the back of an impressive KFC Big Bash League campaign for the Adelaide Strikers, where has taken six wickets in his past three matches.

And he says his height and his lack of exposure at international level could give him an edge against the tourists.

"I think my height and bounce probably makes me a bit of an X-factor and a bit of an unknown for the Pakistan side," he said.

"They probably wouldn't have seen me, at all, so I guess that's a little bit of an upside as well."
