Haddin signs up for Pakistan Super League

Sydney Sixers wicketkeeper-batsman puts himself forward for UAE T20 tournament

Brad Haddin has thrown his name in the ring for the inaugural Pakistan Super League.

The 37-year-old had this year retired from Test and one-day cricket but will continue to play the Twenty20 format. He will feature for the Sydney Sixers in this summer's KFC Big Bash League.

And former Sri Lanka star Mahela Jayawardene has put BBL clubs on alert after signing on with New Zealand's Central Districts for the domestic T20 season.

However, Jaywawardene's Caribbean Premier League form may give some clubs a moment's pause – the 38-year-old scored 33 runs in seven innings at 4.71 for the Jamaica Tallawahs.

The Sixers confirmed Haddin had entered the draft for the PSL, where he joins fellow Australian Brad Hodge and international stars such as Kevin Pietersen and Chris Gayle.

Hodge and Haddin are the only Australians to have nominated for the PSL draft so far with the tournament to run between February 4 to 24 with matches in Dubai and Sharjah.

Those dates overlap with Australia's Qantas Tour of New Zealand where three Chappell-Hadlee ODIs and two Tests will be played while the PSL runs.

That will inevitably prevent Australia's biggest T20 stars such as Glenn Maxwell, James Faulkner and Mitchell Starc from participating.

However, it might be possible for players not selected in the Australian and New Zealand Test squads to join the PSL but they would not be available for the first week of the tournament.

That would certainly be an option for allrounder Shane Watson, whose Test career ended during the recent Ashes series defeat but continues to be available for white-ball formats.

The five yet-to-be-named PSL franchises will be able to draft four international players each.

Six West Indies players have nominated for the tournament – Chris Gayle, Kieron Pollard, Darren Sammy Dwayne Bravo Dwayne Smith and Sunil Narine – with another four from Sri Lanka in Lasith Malinga, Angelo Mathews, Tillakaratne Dilshan and Thisara Perera.

England's Kevin Pietersen, Luke Wright and Tim Bresnan have all nominated while New Zealand's Grant Elliott and Bangladesh's Shakib Al Hasan are also vying to be involved.

Coaches are also up for grabs in the PSL draft, with former Australia coach Mickey Arthur and ex-South Australia coach Darren Berry putting themselves forward. Melbourne Stars coach Stephen Fleming is another to nominate, as is Chaminda Vaas, Gordon Greenidge and Robin Singh.
