Benaud to receive Bradman honour

The late Richie Benaud will become the latest Bradman Honouree at the annual Bradman Foundation Gala dinner on Wednesday night.

The Australian Test great, who nurtured a generation's love for the game with his commentary, passed away in April aged 84.

Benaud was a long-serving Patron of the Bradman Foundation and played a major role in establishing the ceremonial program for which the gala is renowned. 

He traditionally selected, prepared and took to the stage to read the citation of the Bradman Honouree, a prestigious award issued annually to players who have made significant contributions to the international game while reflecting Sir Donald Bradman’s values of courage, honour, integrity, humility and determination.

His wife, Daphne Benaud, will be the guest of honour at the gala  event at the Sydney Cricket Ground.

Benaud’s former teammates Alan Davidson and Neil Harvey will be among other guests.

Previous honourees include Harvey and Davidson, Norm O’Neill, Sunil Gavaskar, Sir Richard Hadlee, Bob Simpson, Glenn McGrath, Mark Taylor.

Last year, former Aussie Test skipper Steve Waugh was inducted alongside Indian great Sachin Tendulkar.
