Ferguson, Sandhu join Australia A

Hughes, Doolan and Richardson require cover

South Australia batsman Callum Ferguson has been drafted into the Australia A squad as cover for an ill Phillip Hughes and a “stiff” Alex Doolan ahead of the side’s two four-day fixtures against India A, beginning on Sunday at Allan Border Field in Brisbane.

Ferguson, 29, has played 30 one-day internationals for Australia but hasn’t worn the green and gold since April 2011, however he may struggle to get an opportunity to impress in Sunday’s match, according to Australia A coach Michael Di Venuto.

“Ferguson comes in to provide cover for Phil Hughes, who is recovering from illness and Alex Doolan who has experienced some back stiffness, however both are expected to train tomorrow and play on Sunday,” Di Venuto said.

NSW paceman Gurinder Sandhu has also been placed on standby for the squad after Redbacks quick Kane Richardson suffered a back complaint.

“During training Kane experienced some back soreness, but is expected to be fit for Australia A’s one-day quad series later this month in Darwin,” said Australia A team physiotherapist Kevin Sims.

Sandhu, 21, is currently in Brisbane with the National Performance Squad at the National Cricket Centre, having earned the call-up on the back of 22 wickets at 26.63 in his seven first-class matches to date.
