Dislocated knee no issue for teen Green

Western Australia quick Jason Behrendorff stole the headlines with 14 wickets but his performance was not the only epic from the Warriors in their Sheffield Shield thrashing of Victoria.

Playing just his second first-class match, teenager Cameron Green battled through after having dislocated his knee in the warm-ups to take three second-innings wickets.

It's the sort of grit and determination that would make nuggetty Western Warriors coach Justin Langer nod in gruff appreciation.

Green reportedly screamed in pain after collapsing while batting in the WACA nets before play started on Sunday, having twisted his knee so badly initial fears were he had torn his anterior cruciate ligament.

But with the aid of WACA physio Nick Jones, the joint was manipulated back into place and Green was able to take his place and was able to contribute a crucial 45, the innings' second-highest score in WA's 285.

His innings included three towering sixes of Victoria Bushrangers and Australia fast bowler James Pattinson.

Green then claimed 3-20 in his nine overs, although the knee did appear to cause him to lose his run-up on occasion in his nine overs.

"It was an amazing effort given that he dislocated his knee in the warm-up and we didn't think we were going to get anything out of him," WA skipper Adam Voges said after the match.

"It's a huge credit to Nick Jones to get him on to the park.

"For a 17-year-old kid to come out after dislocating his knee this morning, get 40 and take three wickets is a pretty big effort."

Green's three meant history for the best Shield figures ever was beyond fellow quick Behrendorff, who backed up his first inning 9-37 with 5-52 to finish on 14-89. That was the ninth-best figures in Shield history and the second-best ever for WA, just behind Terry Alderman's 14-87.

Green became the third-youngest player to debut for the Warriors behind Len Pavy and current Test squad member Shaun Marsh in his first match in the previous Shield round, and took a brilliant 5-24 in his maiden innings.

"That's as good a spell as I've ever seen from someone in their debut game," Langer said of his young star after his debut match.

"His first innings was quite extraordinary really, to bowl fast bouncing outswingers at 17-year-old, that was the highlight. We took a punt and he did really well."

He was handed his Shield opportunity when Warriors coach Langer opted to play four quicks on the grassy Blundstone Arena pitch against Tasmania, making him the 26th player to appear in the competition before reaching their 18th birthday – putting him in an elite group of players that includes Victor Trumper, David Boon and Ricky Ponting.

Green claimed 4-30 and scored 51 not out from 23 balls in a player-of-the-match performance as WA claimed the Under-19 National Championships title last December, a performance that prompted WA under-19s coach Stewart Walters to note: "This guy is going to play Test cricket, so to get him in as early as possible would be great for WA cricket".
