Cutting earns big payday in CPL draft

Four Australians to compete in the Caribbean this year, cult hero Rahkeem Cornwall signs with St Lucia Stars

Queenslander Ben Cutting has earned himself more than $AUD130,000 after he was one of just four Australians picked up in the Caribbean Premier League draft overnight.

The Brisbane Heat allrounder was picked up by the St Kitts & Nevis Patriots on a deal worth $USD110,000, the third-highest pay bracket, and will play alongside Caribbean T20 star Chris Gayle.

Heat teammate Chris Lynn was retained by the Guyana Amazon Warriors for $USD90,000 while Shane Watson will also retained by his franchise, the newly-branded St Lucia Stars, for $USD110,000.

Veteran spinner Brad Hogg was the only other Aussie picked up, signed by the Trinbago Knight Riders for just $USD4000.

Twenty-four of the 28 Australians registered for the draft were overlooked, including the likes of Adam Zampa, Brad Haddin, Nic Maddinson and Shaun Marsh.

Giant allrounder Rahkeem Cornwall, who used his monster frame to great effect in a recent tour game against England, will join Watson at the Stars after being signed for $USD10,000.

Among the international marquee players signed on are Kiwi stars Brendon McCullum, Kane Williamson and Martin Guptill, Sri Lankan legends Kumar Sangakkara and Lasith Malinga and South African Chris Morris.

English quick Tymal Mills, who was purchased for $2.3million in the recent Indian Premier League auction, was the most notable player not to earn a contract. Kiwi allrounder Jimmy Neesham and Corey Anderson were also not bought by any franchise.
