The points that matter
- Bangladesh kept their semi-finals hopes alive with a stunning, thrilling, simply unbelievable five-wicket win over a New Zealand in Cardiff
- Chasing 266 to win, the Tigers were reduced to 4-33 but a record 224-run partnership between Shakib Al Hasan (114) and Mahmudullah (102no) paralysed the Black Caps and delivered an improbable victory
- Bangladesh now need England to beat Australia on Saturday in Birmingham or the match to be washed out to advance to the semi-finals
- Australia will announce their XI at the toss, with a fresh Edgbaston wicket tempting selectors to recall seam-bowling allrounder John Hastings
- Regardless of Saturday’s result, England will finish Group A in top spot, but captain Eoin Morgan wants to keep that winning feeling heading into the semi-finals with a win over Australia

That 224-run partnership between Shakib and Mahmudullah is not only the highest fifth-wicket stand ever for Bangladesh, it’s the highest partnership for any wicket ever for the Tigers in ODI cricket. It was also the second-highest partnership in Champions Trophy history behind the unbeaten 252 Shane Watson and Ricky Ponting compiled against England at Centurion in 2009.
Play of the day
The inspired decision by Bangladesh skipper Mashrafe Mortaza to employ off-spinner Mosaddek Hosain in the 42nd over was a gamble that handsomely paid off. With his seventh ball, Mosaddek swept aside Neil Broom, two balls after that he pinned allrounder Corey Anderson. To cap it all off, the offie whizzed one past Neesham for a comprehensive stumping.
