England women opt for experience

Charlotte Edwards leads 14-woman one-day squad that boasts combined experience of more than 800 games

England have opted for experience in naming a 14-woman squad for the one-day component of the Women's Ashes as they seek to secure a third consecutive series victory.

Captain Charlotte Edwards is one of three players with more than 100 one-day caps for England in a squad that has a combined 807 games of experience.

Sussex all-rounder Georgia Elwiss returns to international duty for the first time since the World T20 tournament in Bangladesh last year, having forced her way back into England contention following a series of impressive performances for the England Women's Academy against the Australian women's development squad, the Commonwealth Bank Shooting Stars, in Dubai earlier this year.

Series home: Women's Ashes 2015

Elwiss scored 316 runs at an average of 63 and take five wickets in four 50-over matches and two T20s during that series.

Left-arm spinner Rebecca Grundy will make her Women's Ashes debut and is the team's most inexperienced player, with 13 wickets in four ODIs and six T20Is to date.

Excitement and expectation for the series is high in England, a fact the ECB director of England women's cricket Clare Connor was quick to seize upon.

"I don't think it's too dramatic a statement to say that the 2015 Women's Ashes contest is possibly the most eagerly anticipated series in the history of international women's cricket.

"The pace at which the women's game is evolving at the moment is extraordinary.

"England's 14-player squad named for the first three ODIs is one of real strength and demonstrates the depth of talent currently running through the England women's performance programme."

The Women's Ashes series will start on July 21 with the first ODI at the County Ground in Taunton, Somerset.  The second will be held in Bristol on July 23 and the third at Worcestershire's New Road on July 26.

As well as contributing vital points in the multi-format Women's Ashes tournament, the three ODIs will form England and Australia's third round of fixtures in the ICC Women's Championship, which will determine qualification for the 2017 Women's World Cup in England.

The 2015 series will be the third time that the Women's Ashes have been contested across all three formats of the game – three ODIs, one Test and three T20Is – with two points available for a win in each of the ODIs and T20Is and four points up for grabs for the winner of the Test match.  Two points will be awarded to each side in the event of a drawn Test.

England will name a Test squad after the ODI component is complete.

England women's ODI squad: Charlotte Edwards (captain), Katherine Brunt, Kathryn Cross, Georgia Elwiss, Lydia Greenway, Rebecca Grundy, Jenny Gunn, Amy Jones, Heather Knight, Laura Marsh, Natalie Sciver, Anya Shrubsole, Sarah Taylor, Lauren Winfield
