England star sets sights on WBBL

Charlotte Edwards has expressed her interest in joining the inaugural WBBL season

The top run-scorer in Women’s T20 International history has thrown her hat in the ring for the inaugural season of the Women’s Big Bash League.

Fresh off her stint with the Alcohol.Think Again Western Fury, England captain Charlotte Edwards has labelled Australia’s domestic women’s competitions as some of the best in the world and told the Lord’s podcast she would jump at the chance to return to these shores next summer.

"I’d love to," Edwards said when asked whether she would be making a WBBL appearance.

"I had a wonderful time out in Perth and I think they’re keen to have me back.

"I need to talk to them over there and obviously make sure that our international schedule allows us to go and play.

"As far as I’m concerned it was a brilliant competition.

"As an international cricketer you want to play in the best competitions in the world and I believe that is (one of those).”

In 84 T20Is for her country, Edwards has tallied 2,229 runs at an average of 33.31 – placing her more than 500 runs ahead of countrywoman and second all-time leading run-scorer Sarah Taylor.

Edwards proved the difference in the 2013-14 Women's Ashes series

Australia’s Ashes tormentor has an equally solid record Down Under, with 264 runs at an average of 33 to go with her 413 runs at 41.30 for the Fury in 2014-15.

That WT20 total saw Edwards finish fourth on the competition run-scoring behind Southern Stars Alex Blackwell, Meg Lanning and fellow England international Heather Knight.

With the WBBL tournament specifics yet to be announced it’s not yet clear what restrictions, if any, will be placed on international signings, but with those impressive numbers and extensive leadership experience, the 2013 Wisden Cricketer of the Year will no doubt feature high on the wish lists of all eight franchises.
