White backs Gayle for derby, Chappell calls for ban

Jamaican set to play for Renegades as fallout continues from controversial interview

Melbourne Renegades want Chris Gayle to let his hefty bat do the talking when they take on the Melbourne Stars at Etihad Stadium on Saturday night, but former Test captain Ian Chappell believes the West Indian should be banned internationally from Twenty20 tournaments.

The Renegades host the Stars in their Big Bash League clash at what could well be a record crowd at Etihad Stadium, and with Aaron Finch and Matthew Wade on Australia ODI duty, they need Gayle's best with the bat.

It will be Gayle's first appearance for the Renegades since his controversial sideline interview with Network Ten journalist Melanie McLaughlin, which earned the Jamaican a $10,000 fine.

Cameron White, who has taken over the captaincy from Finch, said the team had spent the day on Thursday playing lawn bowls and Gayle had been in "good spirits".

"Speaking to him and looking at his body language I think he's in a good place so hopefully what's happened this week won't affect his cricket too much," White said, adding that he couldn't see any reason why Gayle should be prevented from suiting up again.

"Yes, why not? The Renegades and Cricket Australia have had their say, the incident has happened and Chris has apologised, so now it's a matter of concentrating on the game tomorrow night and hopefully Chris can play a big part in winning that game."

White, who was the Stars captain until he was cut before this season, said the loss of Finch at the top of the order would be a blow for his new side but the recruitment of Gayle would help cover his explosiveness at the beginning of an innings.

"Finchy's the best T20 player in the world and has made three scores above 50 in five hits so he's hard to replace," he said.

"Having Chris there still keeps the opposition bowlers under a lot of pressure.

"He's been threatening to play a real big hand, so hopefully tomorrow night he does it."

The Stars won the first derby last Saturday night by seven wickets but White said with both teams losing players to international duty, this was a different proposition.

The Stars are missing Glenn Maxwell, James Faulkner and Scott Boland while the Renegades have made four changes to their 13-man squad.

Watch: Gayle: It was a simple joke

Meanwhile Australian great and Nine Wide World of Sports commentator Ian Chappell has called on Cricket Australia to propose a worldwide contracting ban on Gayle, saying a zero-tolerance message needed to be implemented on what he deemed "totally inappropriate" behaviour in a sport trying to gain traction with women.

"I wouldn't have a problem if Cricket Australia said to the clubs, 'he's never to be contracted again in this country'," Chappell told AAP in Sydney, where he participated in an Optus SMB Cricket Legends event.

"And I also wouldn't have a problem if Cricket Australia said to the ICC, 'what we're doing should be worldwide'.

"You'd have to talk to the individual countries then ... but I wouldn't have a problem if it was tabled at an ICC meeting that Cricket Australia said, 'this is what we're doing and we would recommend that everybody else do the same'.

"How are you going to stop it otherwise?"

Gayle later apologised for any offence, saying it was a "simple joke".

But Chappell thought he was "past help probably now", and said the focus should be on sending a message to up-and-coming male cricketers.

"If it was a one-off thing, yeah, slap him with a $10,000 fine and say 'mate, don't do it again'," he said.

"But every woman I spoke to (about Gayle) who's working at the cricket, you got the same answer from.

"They were quite adamant about it."
