Overlooked Lynn keeps his focus on the Heat

Big-hitting Brisbane star revelling in finding settled off-field lifestyle that's translating to on-field fireworks

Chris Lynn was overlooked for Australia's one-day team to play India this summer but has been in stunning form as the KFC Big Bash League's leading run-scorer.

Lynn said his form on the field is due to the balance he's found off it after he led his Brisbane Heat to their first win of the summer.

Lynn was at his brutal best in the six-wicket win over Sydney Thunder, plundering a 32-ball 75 to get his first win as Heat captain and keep their slim finals hopes alive.

It's been a rocky 18 months for the 25-year-old, succumbing to injury twice before returning in spectacular fashion this summer, blasting one-day double-centuries in Premier Cricket and now shining in the BBL.

"I've had two shoulder injuries now that have kept me out of the game for quite a while so it puts things into perspective," Lynn told cricket.com.au.

"When you do get an opportunity and you're doing well, you want to make the most of it. It's probably easy to say than to do.

"Life for me at the moment is great off the field. Girlfriend, friends, family, they've been great support and I think that's translated into my cricket because I'm not worried about anything else coming to training or coming to games.

"We've got a good bunch of boys here and again they give me support.

"One thing just flows into another and while you're hitting the ball well you want to play that aggressive brand of cricket which I do like to play, and it's paid off for me."

Scores of 75no, 101 and Sunday's 75 left many shocked the right-hander's name was not included in the 13-man Australia squad named today for the first three one-day internationals against India.

Having failed to get into a star-studded batting line-up in the 50-over format, Lynn is seen by many to have his name at the top of the list when discussing batting options for the World T20 in India in March.

But Lynn says his main focus is performing well for the Heat and making the BBL finals, and while his own form has been extraordinary, he stopped short before calling it the "best of his life".

"You don't want to say 'best form of your life' because you always want to get better," Lynn said.

"I suppose you're in good form, but while saying that I've still got weaknesses in my game.

"I've just got to keep working hard because I know one thing in my career has been inconsistency.

"I know while I'm in form I want to keep smashing out the runs. I know if I'm doing that I think the team's doing okay as well."

Sydney Thunder coach Paddy Upton, who was powerless watching on in the away dugout as Lynn went ballistic, had mixed feelings on the special innings by the Heat captain.

On one hand, Upton and the Thunder were left shellshocked at the bruising stroke play of Lynn, having identified him as the key wicket prior to the match.

But on the other, Upton was blown away by the raw power of the Queenslander, appreciating the knock as a cricket fan, albeit one rooting for the other team.

"Chris was always going to be the danger man," Upton said.

"We knew even with the total we had if we could knock Chris back it would give us a very good chance of winning.

"If we didn't knock Chris back he would be able to take the game away from us – he's that kind of player.

"Tonight was his night and that's the way it's going to happen.

"I know there are games going forward where Shane Watson or Andre Russell on their night will take the game away from anybody. Tonight it was Chris's.

"It was actually a pleasure to watch from a cricketing spectacle."

While Lynn is making his case for national selection, a man 15 years his senior, who has been there and done it all, continues to show his class.

Mike Hussey was again the star batsman for the Thunder, recording his third half-century of BBL|05 in helping his side post a competitive 5-186 from 20 overs.

"He just keep rolling back the years," Upton said of the Thunder captain.

WATCH: Mr Cricket is also Mr Consistent

"Mother Cricket was actually quite funny tonight because he has a tiny little hamstring (niggle) and he decided he was either going to hit out or get out and all he managed to do was get a whole heap of twos all the time.

"He's just such a consummate professional.

"He just knows his game, he knows how to read a game, read a wicket, read the situation and it's such a privilege and pleasure to work with him and to watch him still at his age out there still carving out the runs and showing the youngsters how to do it."
