Lynn reveals extent of neck injury

Heat star played with a bulging disc for over a month but says he's staying hopeful of an improbable BBL return

Chris Lynn's six-hitting feats in this summer's KFC Big Bash League have been epic, but even more so after the Brisbane Heat star revealed he had been playing the entire tournament in excruciating pain.

Lynn has smashed 26 sixes in BBL|06 – including 11 in one match against Perth Scorchers at the WACA – before being called up to Australia's one-day squad and making his debut at the Gabba.

After which he was sent for scans back in Brisbane where it was discovered he had been batting with a serious neck injury for at least the previous five weeks.

"I've had a bulging disc in my neck for the past five weeks, but I only had a scan last week (and) found out it was pushing against the nerve," Lynn told Triple M Brisbane today.

"I actually thought it was in my shoulder but it’s the pain from the disc. It's not ideal."

The injury has ended Lynn's involvement in the VB ODI Series against Pakistan, but the big-hitting Queenslander is refusing to give up on playing a role in the Heat's BBL|06 title charge.

"The surgeon said about three or four weeks (out of the game). But, look, if the Heat make the final, I'm going to say there's a small percentage chance I'll be able to play," Lynn said.

"It's a small percentage, but it's better than none I guess."

Lynn, Stanlake receive Aussie ODI caps

The Heat face the Renegades at the Gabba tonight and, with a final four spot already secured, are keen to continue their winning ways and earn hosting rights.

While the Big Bash has been a boon for Lynn, earning him a maiden ODI cap and putting his name at the forefront of selectors' minds, it has not earned him a financial windfall in the IPL.

Lynn could have expected to fetch a sky-high price in this year's Indian Premier League action, but was retained by the Kolkata Knight Riders for the 2017 season.

His opportunities at KKR have been limited, featuring in only a handful of games after the franchise bought him in the 2014 auction for 130 lakh (roughly A$255,000).

"It's funny because they retained me just before the Big Bash started. At that point in time I was pretty happy but four weeks down the track I'm thinking 'Oh no, what have I done?'"

The comment was made in jest to Triple M's jocular hosts, but it underlines a very real issue for cricketers on the fringe of Australian selection, one Lynn conceded was causing much consternation for players.

Re-live Chris Lynn's staggering six-fest

"It's a touchy subject for a lot of cricketers around Australia, especially with all the opportunities you get around the world just to play T20 cricket," Lynn said.

"One, it's financially beneficial and two, it's just easier on your body. But it's totally up to the individual.

"From my point of view, making my ODI debut was great, and hopefully I get a few more opportunities there.

"In terms of Test cricket stuff, I don't know.

"I haven't played that much Shield cricket over the past three seasons. I've got good numbers and stats and all that but because I haven't played as much as I'd like you can't really throw your hat in the ring.

"I've had plenty of opportunities with the white ball and the T20 stuff and I've gone alright the last couple of tournaments."

Lynn scored 309 runs from five Big Bash matches this season, with a top score of 98 not out, and strike rate of 177.58.
