Surgery puts Lynn out for start of summer

Chris Lynn will miss the start of the Australian summer for the fourth season in a row after he opted to have surgery to repair his troublesome shoulder.

The Courier Mail has reported the luckless Queenslander, who last damaged his left shoulder during the Indian Premier League earlier this year, will go under the knife in Melbourne on Monday.

The 27-year-old is hopeful of returning for this season's KFC Big Bash League, but will miss at least Australia's proposed ODI tour of India in September-October and the start of the Australian summer. He will also miss the upcoming Caribbean Premier League, which starts next month.

Lynn has carefully managed the injured joint and associated pain over the past few years, but has finally decided to take his medicine and go under the knife in the hope of solving the problem once and for all.

"I have been battling through each tournament and umming and arr-ing at training but the time has come to get it done," Lynn told The Courier Mail.

"I was getting sorer and sorer after training. I am pretty confident I will be back for the Big Bash.

"I will cost myself a bit but physically and mentally it will mean a lot to get it done."

Lynn's decision to have surgery means he will miss the domestic one-day competition for the fourth year in a row. How long he has to spend on the sidelines will be determined once surgery has been completed.

The powerful right-hander's injury woes means that, aside from his solitary ODI to date against Pakistan in January, Lynn has played just 10 List A matches – all for Australia A – since November 2013.

While his luckless run of injuries has meant he's barely been spotted in first-class or one-day cricket over the past four years, he's established a reputation as one of the biggest and most exhilarating hitters in the 20-over game.

Lynn has amassed almost 1500 domestic T20 runs in Australia, India and the Caribbean over the past 18 months, averaging more than 56 and striking at almost 160 runs per 100 balls.

He was picked in Australia's 15-man squad for the recent ICC Champions Trophy, but didn't play a game during the tournament.
