Another milestone for run-machine Rogers

Somerset veteran Chris Rogers makes 132 on day one against Nottinghamshire

Former Australia Test opener Chris Rogers has made his 75th first-class hundred during Somerset's County Championship clash with Nottinghamshire in Taunton.

Rogers, who retired from Test cricket last year and signed on to captain Somerset this northern summer, had made a pair of half-centuries in his previous two fixtures but went one step better as part of a 269-run stand for the third wicket with James Hildreth (135) after he won the toss and elected to bat.

Quick Single: Rapid ambidextrous quick discovered

Rogers finished with 132 from 204 balls with 18 fours, and becomes just the ninth Australian to make 75 first-class centuries.

Incredibly, the home side went from 2-302 to 9-322 in 12 overs late on day one, and lost a spectacular 5-0 as young English quick Jake Ball (6-47) and Proteas leg-spinner Imran Tahir (2-66) combined to devastating effect.

Rogers has 910 runs at 39.56 this county season, with last night's effort his second hundred of the campaign.

Rogers reflects on the early days

Somerset are third in the first division of the County Championship, behind leaders Middlesex, and Jason Gillespie's Yorkshire.

Those two sides are currently squaring off at Lord's, with Middlesex 5-208 at stumps on day one off the back of an unbeaten 120 to promising 22-year-old Nick Gubbins.

At the other end of the table, Hampshire began brightly in their quest to stave off relegation, making 5-325 on day one against Durham, while Warwickshire were bowled out for 219 on day one against Lancashire as both teams scrap to avoid the drop.

Rogers, 39, passed the 25,000 first-class run mark in July though despite his latest three-figure score, he will be hard pressed to move any rungs up the list of 'Most first-class hundreds by Australians' after indicating this will be his final season with Somerset.

Smith confident Starc will return for first Test

The tenacious left-hander also retired from Sheffield Shield cricket last summer, and is currently four hundreds short of the next trio on the ladder – former Australia captain Steve Waugh, and Queensland legends Matthew Hayden and Stuart Law.

Rogers has played 313 first-class matches (including 25 Tests), having spent the first half of his career with Western Australia before joining Victoria in 2008, and has also represented five counties: Derbyshire, Leicestershire, Middlesex, Northamptonshire and Somerset.
