CommBank MyCricket Legends: Dizzy returns

A cameo from an ex-Test quick, a devastating spell from tearaway and a couple of super solo efforts feature in this week’s edition of CommBank MyCricket Legends

Former Test fast-bowler Jason Gillespie has wound back the clock, producing a match-winning spell with the ball and a vital knock with the bat in a one-off local T20 appearance.

Gillespie ventured to Yankalilla Cricket Club on Thursday, 72 kilometres south of Adelaide, for the match and arrived at the crease with the hosts in trouble at 8-55.

But with a gritty Test double-century to his name, Gillespie proved typically immovable as he and teammate Douglas Jones put on 42 for the eighth wicket.

The Adelaide Strikers coach only contributed nine to the partnership as Jones cleared the fence three times to see Yankalilla post 99.

And while Gillespie must have been fuming not to be thrown the new ball, he came on second-change and helped restrict Port Elliot to just 70, finishing with 3-11 from his four overs.

His Strikers weren’t able to match their coach’s heroics on Monday night, as the Melbourne Renegades ended their KFC Big Bash League title hopes with a six-run win, but they did walk away with a consolation 77-run victory over the Sydney Thunder on Wednesday night.

Prior to that clash, Renegades spearhead James Pattinson continued his return to red-ball cricket with a five-wicket haul for Victorian Premier Cricket side Dandenong.

Pattinson wreaked havoc on Geelong’s top-order, snaring three early scalps before returning to claim two more, finishing with 5-23 as the Cats were bowled out for 242.

The tearaway also took a catch to dismiss Brenton McDonald, the younger brother of his Renegades and Victorian Bushrangers Andrew McDonald, for 64.

In Western Australia, Bunbury bowler Nathan Scott was denied a 10-wicket haul in cruel fashion on Sunday.

Opening the bowling with Peel chasing 160 to win, Scott made consistent breakthroughs throughout the innings. He removed Peel’s top nine batsman but with last wicket pair at the crease, teammate James Morris ended the innings with a run-out.

Finally in country Victoria, Collegians first drop Ben Hurley scored over 80 per cent of his side’s runs in a remarkable individual batting effort.

Hurley arrived at the crease at 1-1 and despite getting little assistance from his teammates, he racked up a century with a revolving door of batting partners.

He was the last man out for Collegians, finishing on 106. Extras was the only contribution in double-figures, with opener Kyle Grainger’s eight the next highest tally.
