Rogers tons up against Voges' team

Chris Rogers returns to Lord's in fine style with an unbeaten century against former side Middlesex

Former Australia Test opener Chris Rogers has recorded his first century for English county side Somerset, finishing day one unbeaten on 104 against Adam Voges’ Middlesex side.

Rogers, who is Somerset captain and who previously played for Middlesex, took the honours with the bat at Lord's, posting his 74th first-class century from 201 balls.

He shared an unbroken stand of 125 with the near equally prolific James Hildreth (60 not out) as Somerset reached 219 for two before the evening rain arrived on Sunday.

Rogers enjoyed success at the same venue during last year's Ashes series, scoring 173 and an unbeaten 49 as Australia romped to a 405-run victory.

"It was enjoyable to come back and play here against Middlesex, I have a new club and I hadn't scored a century (for them) yet, so to get the first one here was very special," Rogers told somersetcountycc.co.uk after play.

"I do love playing here, it's one of the best places in the world to play and it's another memory to keep.

"Last time I played here, Steve Waugh told me this was my ground. Sometimes you do have an affinity with a ground and it's characteristics. I love playing here so to come here and get a start, I felt good. I really wanted that century."

Meanwhile, Lancashire's Kyle Jarvis produced the most notable bowling performance of the current round of county fixtures to date, snaring 6-70 against Surrey.

Jarvis helped to make short work of Surrey’s batting line-up – including dismissing Sri Lanka legend Kumar Sangakkara for nought – with only opener Rory Burns (92) providing resistance for Surrey between the showers at Old Trafford, where the Londoners struggled to 191 all out.

Lancashire were a very careful 16 for none in reply.

In Division Two, Mark Cosgrove was dismissed for four as Leicestershire reached 4-253 at stumps on day one of their clash with Worcestershire.
