Hussey appointed for Tigers review

Mr Cricket appointed to conduct an independent review at Cricket Tasmania

Former Australia batsman Mike Hussey has been appointed by Cricket Tasmania to lead an Independent Review into the state's Male Pathway and High Performance programs.

Hussey, who retired from all forms of cricket last year and took on the role of director of cricket at Sydney Thunder last for BBL|06, has been handed the task amidst a shake-up in Tasmanian cricket, triggered by a series of poor on-field results.

The Tigers finished the Sheffield Shield season in last position, and failed to make the finals of the Matador One-Day Cup last October.

Last month, coach Dan Marsh was sacked as Tasmania continued their poor run; prior to the current summer, they finished in the bottom two of the Shield in each of Marsh's three seasons in charge and they also missed the finals of the one-day competition on four consecutive occasions.

"The purpose of the review is to ensure that Cricket Tasmania's pathway and High Performance structures are providing the best opportunity for elite talent to be identified, nurtured, progressed and maintained and capable of achieving the goals of the Cricket Tasmania strategic plan," Cricket Tasmania said in a statement.

"The review will include evaluation of the Emerging Tigers and respective under age state programs, along with the Tasmanian Tigers and Futures League.

"Mr Hussey’s brief is to review the current structures and programs and to provide recommendations, where appropriate, to ensure those structures and programs are best practice and adequately staffed and funded."

The road to the Dharamsala Decider

The role represents another opportunity for Hussey within Australian cricket, after the former ODI skipper took on an assistant coach role with Australia A during their winter series in Queensland in 2016.

"I hope I can make some conclusions that will help Tasmanian cricket in the short term but also to help to put a structure in place that creates an environment to foster successful Tasmanian cricket teams and produce future Australian players in all forms of the game," Hussey said.

Andrew Gaggin, Chairman of Cricket Tasmania, was delighted to have appointed someone of Hussey's standing.

"We are very pleased to have someone of the calibre of Michael Hussey to undertake the review," Gaggin said.

"The report will highlight any areas in Cricket Tasmania’s Pathway and High Performance operations that require attention.

"It is not about personalities, rather ensuring that our players, coaches and support staff are provided with the best structures and funding to ensure their identification, progression and maintenance in a highly competitive national competition."

Hussey's report will be prepared for consideration at the May meeting of the Cricket Tasmania Board.
