Steyn set for another stop on T20 circuit

South Africa quick joins England domestic T20 tournament after being omitted from one-day tri-series squad to rest for Tests

Omitted from South Africa's one-day squad for the Caribbean tri-series, Dale Steyn will instead continue his journey through the world's Twenty20 leagues having signed a deal to play in England.

Glamorgan today announced the Proteas' pace spearhead would join them for a seven match stint in June for England's domestic Twenty20 competition.

Steyn is currently warming the bench with the Gujarat Lions in the Indian Premier League, where he has played just the one match, bowling two overs for 17 runs.

Quick Single: Steyn rested from ODI series

"It has been a very different tournament for me personally but fascinating nonetheless because I have probably learnt as much in one season as a squad member as I did in four or five on the field," Steyn told the Times of India this week.

"Sitting with the coaches and reading the game from the side is very different to being in the thick of the action and I can assure you I would still prefer to be inside the ropes than outside.

"Hopefully I will have my chance next month having been offered a short contract with Glamorgan.

"If I can get my visa and other paperwork sorted I look forward to putting all my newly gained knowledge to good work."

Although unused, Steyn is not likely to be released by second-placed Gujarat until their IPL campaign is complete.

Quick Single: Tri-series to be played under lights

The fast bowler's deal with Glamorgan is to play the first seven matches of the competition, between May 26 and June 24, before Australian speedster Shaun Tait arrives.

"The timing of this opportunity is ideal and there is no better way to prepare than playing in the IPL," Steyn said in a statement released by Glamorgan.

Cricket South Africa opted not to take Steyn for the Caribbean tri-series featuring the West Indies and Australia, with selection committee convenor Linda Zondi saying he was being prioritised for Test cricket.

"In the short term our immediate focus must be to get back among the top-ranked Test nations and for this reason we are resting Dale Steyn for this tour," Zondi said.

"He is vital to our ambitions in the longest format and he is going to have a heavy workload in the months ahead with home and away series against New Zealand, a home series against Sri Lanka and an away Test series in Australia which is where we need to perform."

Quick Single: Social media storm his Windies ODI squad

Steyn is also set for his first stint in the Caribbean Premier League this season, having been picked up the Jamaica Tallawahs after Lasith Malinga was ruled out with a knee injury.

The CPL is held in the Caribbean in July, with Steyn expected to arrive around the same time many of his Proteas teammates will be departing.

However, the CPL will feature several South Africans.

"I'm looking forward to playing against some of my great friends and team-mates, amongst them Hashim Amla, AB (de Villiers), Faf (du Plessis), David Miller and Morne (Morkel) this summer," Steyn said.

"It will certainly add a nice bit of spice to the mix."

Steyn and the other Proteas will have little time to rest following the CPL, which is ends in late July, and the start of a home Test series against New Zealand which begins on August 13.
