Christian draws the ire of match referee

Australian Dan Christian has attracted the attention of the match referee for accidently wearing the wrong playing shirt in the Indian Premier League overnight.

Christian wore a shirt bearing his name and No.54 during Rising Pune Supergiant's bowling innings, but the allrounder made what could be a costly wardrobe change in the run chase.

After the Australian hit a match-winning six in the final over, eagle-eyed viewers were quick to point out on social media that Christian was wearing a shirt bearing the No.55 and the name of English teammate Ben Stokes.

The tournament's rules regarding clothing and equipment suggest Christian may attract some kind of punishment for his mistake; the laws state that "a player’s name and number must correctly reflect the identity of the player".

And the allrounder has indicated that he's already attracted some kind of reprimand from the match referee.

"Put my shirt out to dry with @stokesy after the bowling innings, and grabbed the wrong one before I went out to bat, much to the ire of the match referee," Christian wrote in an Instagram post.

It's yet to be revealed exactly what punishment, if any, Christian cops for his mistake, but it's unlikely to wipe the smile off his face after his side made it six wins from seven matches on the eve of his 34th birthday.

Christian is far from the first player in recent years involved in a wardrobe malfunction on the cricket field.

Christian's countryman and RPS teammate Usman Khawaja had a chuckle when he arrived in the IPL last year to find a 'Khwaja' shirt waiting for him.

And earlier this year, New Zealand's skipper Kane Williamson guided his side to a comfortable victory over Bangladesh wearing a shirt that proudly displayed the name 'Willamson'.

And more than 12 years ago, fans in Sydney watched an Australian fast bowler named 'McGarth' take on New Zealand in a one-day international at the SCG.

As pointed out by Kiwi commentator Ian Smith at the time, you'd think the name 'Glenn McGrath' – playing his 194th one-day international at the time – would be easy to remember!
