Take World T20 to the US: Lehmann

National coach says global event would be best way to help capture a significant market

Australia coach Darren Lehmann has joined the growing push to explore the potentially lucrative North American market as an area for expanding cricket, citing the United States as an ideal location to host an ICC World T20 tournament.

Which Marsh brother caught it better?

This summer, 10 KFC Big Bash matches will be broadcast live in the USA and Canada through NBCSN, meaning cricket will be available in almost 85 million US households, while in July and August, Florida played host to the final stages of the Caribbean Premier League as well as two T20 internationals between West Indies and India.

Lehmann believes the trend should continue via the World T20 tournament, which Australia is set to host for the first time in in 2020.

"The Twenty20 circuit could include a stop in the United States, a country that could also be targeted for hosting a World Twenty20, which would be the best way, at least in my opinion, of breaking the game there," he told Fairfax.

"Cricket can undoubtedly be a success in the US thanks to the already significant supporter base that exists there among its large Asian community.

"And a global event has the potential to capture the attention of those not necessarily interested in the sport already.

"Soccer took the World Cup to the USA in 1994 and the benefits of doing that can now be seen, two decades on, with the growth of Major League Soccer, while rugby union has also grasped the nettle by awarding its 2019 World Cup to Japan, a country it sees as its next big market."
