Recuperating Lehmann to miss Chappell-Hadlee

Australia coach still waiting medical clearance to fly after suffering Deep Vein Thrombosis and will miss NZ ODI series

Australia will be without coach Darren Lehmann for the one-day leg of the Qantas Tour of New Zealand as he continues to recover from Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT).

Lehmann was diagnosed with DVT during Australia's ODI loss to India at the SCG on Sunday and has not travelled with Australia's T20 squad to Adelaide, with batting coach Michael Di Venuto acting as interim coach.

Australia are scheduled to depart for New Zealand on February 1 ahead of the first of three Chappell-Hadlee Trophy matches in Auckland two days later.

"Darren is in good health and feeling well at the moment but is still awaiting medical clearance for us to be satisfied that it is safe for him to fly. As such he will not travel to New Zealand for the one-day international series," Cricket Australia's Bupa Support Team Chief Medical Officer Dr John Orchard said.

"He is meeting with specialists in Sydney later this week and will have repeat scans on Friday to check his progress.

"It is anticipated he will be fit to resume work in the coming weeks."

Lehmann, who suffered DVT during his playing days in 2007, experienced swelling in his left calf prior to Sunday's fifth ODI against India before being taken to the Sydney Cricket Ground's radiology clinic.

The 45-year-old was then admitted to Sydney's Royal Prince Alfred Hospital for further tests, and will remain in Sydney after he was released yesterday.

CA General Manager of Team Performance Pat Howard says Lehmann's health is the No.1 priority.

"The health and wellbeing of our players and staff is always our first priority and that’s certainly the case with Darren," Howard said.

"We will await medical advice from the specialists before we make any decisions regarding an interim coaching role for the limited-overs series in New Zealand."We have strong depth in our coaching ranks and will make that decision in due course.

"It is anticipated that Darren will make it back for the Test series, but as with all the decisions we make, we will be guided by medical advice."

Following the ODI series, Australia play a two-Test Trans-Tasman Trophy series starting on February 12 in Wellington.
