Big Bash League, Baby is back!

West Indies international Darren Sammy re-signs with the Hobart Hurricanes for BBL|05

Former West Indies captain Darren Sammy has re-signed with the Hobart Hurricanes for the fifth edition of the KFC T20 Big Bash League.

Sammy featured in purple on four occasions in BBL|04, but expects to be available for all of Hobart’s matches this upcoming summer.

The BBL|05 agreement is an extension of the West Indian’s original contract which included an option for a second season; an option which Sammy has taken the Hurricanes up on.

“Why wouldn't I want to come back?” said Sammy, “After all, nothing hits you like a hurricane.”

“It felt like a home away from home with the Cane train and in the beautiful city of Hobart.

“It’s a great team, great city and full of great people.”

The big allrounder arrived with a bang, blasting 38 off 12 deliveries, in his maiden BBL match against the Melbourne Stars.

Overall, the allrounder averaged 21 with the bat at a strike rate of 210 last season and also picked up two wickets.

“Once there's a West Indian in the house there will always be flair, and now a West Indian has mixed with a hurricane, oh my lookout!” said Sammy.

“The Purple Army is up there with one of the best home crowds in the world.

“I can't wait to play in front of them again.

“Tell everyone in Hobart to big up themselves! I'm coming back!”

Despite his feats on the field, Sammy is probably best known for re-christening the BBL, ‘the Big Bash League, Baby’ after a memorable victory over the Brisbane Heat at Blundstone Arena.

Sammy most recently featured in West Indies’ World Cup side – the Calypso Kings knocked out of the tournament by eventual runners-up New Zealand in the quarter-final stage.

The 31-year-old had a solid tournament Down Under, managing a run-a-ball 177 runs at an average of 35.40 with the one wicket to his name.
