Boon bans WT20 captains

Du Plessis, Chandimal out for slow over rates

Former Australia Test player David Boon has suspended South Africa and Sri Lanka captains Faf du Plessis and Dinesh Chandimal for their sides' next World Twenty20 match.

Boon, now a member of the Emirates Elite Panel of ICC Match Referees, imposed the ban and fined the teams' players for slow over rates in Thursday's matches.

It was both captains' second over-rate offence within a 12-month period, sparking an automatic and immediate one-match suspension, a 20% match fee fine for Du Plessis and Chandimal and a 10% match fee fine for each of the South Africa and Sri Lanka players.

Du Plessis pleaded guilty to the offence and accepted the proposed sanctions, so there was no need for a formal hearing. Du Plessis will miss his side’s match against England on 29 March.

Chandimal pleaded not guilty to the offence and, in accordance with the provisions of the Code, a full hearing was held on Friday, with Boon appointed to adjudicate the matter. Following the hearing, the charge and proposed penalty were upheld and Chandimal will miss Sri Lanka’s final Super 10 stage match against New Zealand on 31 March.

South Africa had early been found short of the over rate against New Zealand in their World T20 opener, while Sri Lanka were short by one over against New Zealand in Pallekele on 21 November 2013.
