Warner's tour ends with fractured thumb

Australia vice-captain faces four to six weeks on the sidelines after nasty blow in second ODI

David Warner's presence in the first Test against Bangladesh next month is in some doubt after the opening batsman suffered a fracture in his left thumb in Australia's second ODI against England.

Facing his first ball and the second of the match, Warner copped the blow from a rearing Steven Finn delivery which ballooned over the slip cordon for a single.

Warner immediately called for the Australian medical staff and after a short consultation left the field, with skipper Steve Smith replacing his deputy.

Cricket Australia later revealed Warner had a fracture in the thumb, and is now expected to be sideline for 4-6 weeks, ending his tour of the British Isles and also placing him in doubt for the opening Test against Bangladesh, which begins on October 9.

Warner was struck on the same thumb in the second innings of the Brisbane Test last summer from India quick Umesh Yadav.

The dynamic left-hander batted on, but more harm would follow a Test later in Melbourne when he was hit on the forearm by fast bowler Peter Siddle in the MCG nets on the morning of day two and was unable to take the field that day.

The injury ends Warner's proud record of never having missed an international through injury has not missed a match through injury in his six-year career, with Aaron Finch confirmed as his replacement for the remainder of the series.
