Warner breaks Gayle's IPL record

Australia and Sunrisers' opener further cements his status as one of the IPL's greatest ever

David Warner’s incredible record in the Indian Premier League got even more impressive on Thursday night, becoming the most prolific overseas batsman in the tournament’s 10-year history.

The Sunrisers Hyderabad captain already holds the record for more fifties in the history of the competition, having passed the milestone 35 times, for 33 half-centuries and two centuries.

Quick single: Warner reveals Rashid's due dligence

While he was denied No.36 against Mumbai Indians when he was dismissed attempting a switch hit on 49, that total did see him leapfrog Chris Gayle into fifth spot on the all-time IPL run-scorers list.

The 30-year-old now has 3,512 runs to his name, ahead of Gayle’s 3,464.

Warner, Henriques post fifties in big win

Above Warner on the list sit four Indians – Suresh Raina (4,171), Kohli (4,110), Rohit Sharma (3,879) and Gambhir (3,729) – meaning the Australian is now the tournament most successful overseas batsman.

Gayle could have an opportunity to claim back the record on Friday when his Royal Challengers Bangalore take on Mumbai, but the West Indies superstar was dropped for RCB’s most recent outing in favour of South African AB de Villiers, who was returning from a back injury.

Warner is currently the frontrunner in the battle for the Orange Cap – awarded to the tournament’s top run-scorer – with 139 runs at 69.5 from Sunrisers’ three matches to date in 2017.
