Warner again sits out Aussie training

Australia team officials say vice-captain David Warner will play in the opening Gillette ODI against England despite missing the side's main training session on Saturday.

An ill Warner was absent from Australian training on Friday, which was ultimately a short affair due to rain, and while he was at the MCG on Saturday, he didn't take part in a net session or fielding drills with his teammates.

The opener did complete some laps of the ground however, and word from the team is he will be right to play the series opener tomorrow.

"I think he's OK, he was having a bit of a gastro issue yesterday," skipper Steve Smith said. "He turned up here today and walked the oval a few times. He said he'll be fine so I don't think there'll be any trouble there."

Warner, the No.3 ranked ODI batsman, has been one of the most dominant 50-over players in the world in recent years, especially at home.

Since Australia's World Cup final win at the MCG in 2015, the left-hander has averaged more than 80 from 11 games in Australia, including five centuries.

He's enjoyed the surrounds of the MCG in recent times as well; he's scored 156, 144, 16, 103 and 86 in his past five innings at the ground in all formats.

Warner is the latest player to be struck down by illness in recent weeks, joining teammates Steve Smith and Patrick Cummins as well as England captain Joe Root, who have all been affected by stomach problems since Christmas.

Cummins and Smith both had an upset stomach during the fourth Magellan Ashes Test in Melbourne, minor complaints that didn't significantly hamper their performances.

Root was so ill during the fifth Test in Sydney that he was hospitalised due to severe dehydration after the fourth day of the match. He bravely left his hospital bed on day five to resume his innings, posting a half-century before the illness became too much for him and he retired his innings.

As Australia completed a victory that handed them a 4-0 series win, Root was asleep in the dressing-rooms.

Root batted in the nets in Sydney this week and England captain Eoin Morgan has confirmed he will play on Sunday.
