England's Willey ruled out of ODI series

Allrounder to miss five-match ODI series against Pakistan after being struck on the hand in a T20 match for Yorkshire

England allrounder David Willey has been ruled out of the forthcoming one-day international series against Pakistan after injuring his left hand, the England and Wales Cricket Board announced on Sunday.

Willey, 26,was struck on his left hand early in Yorkshire's domestic T20 semi-final against Durham and briefly left the field, before returning to complete his spell.

He underwent an X-ray on Sunday, and will undergo a further scan and be assessed by a consultant on Monday. He has been withdrawn from England's ODI squad until the extent of his injury is known.

Willey's place in the squad will be taken by Nottinghamshire seamer Jake Ball.

The England squad will convene in Southampton before the first match of a five-match series at the Rose Bowl on Wednesday.

The Test series between the countries was drawn 2-2.

The injury could interrupt the left-armer's preparations for the upcoming KFC Big Bash League season, after his return was confirmed by the Perth Scorchers on Sunday.

Quick single: Scorchers sign five international for BBL|06

The Scorchers have re-signed Willey for a second season alongside Australia representatives Adam Voges, Mitchell Marsh, Shaun Marsh and Nathan Coulter-Nile for BBL|06, while they have also signed young allrounder Hilton Cartwright and promising young quick Jhye Richardson.

It leaves the Scorchers with just one vacancy on their 18-man roster, to be filled by an overseas player.

"We’re delighted to have retained the majority of our squad, which helped us make the BBL semi-finals for the fifth consecutive year last season," said Scorchers coach Justin Langer.

"It’s particularly pleasing to have our players committed and secured at this point in time, allowing us excellent preparation for another tilt at the BBL."

Willey's availability for BBL|06 will depend on his selection for England, who are scheduled to play white-ball cricket in India in January.

The identity of Perth's second overseas player remains a mystery, although Langer has flagged his interest in star South Africa quicks Dale Steyn and Morne Morkel.
