Lillee and CA fail to reach terms

Dennis Lillee and Cricket Australia have failed to agree terms to renew the fast bowling legend's contract to work with Australia's burgeoning stock of quick bowlers.

After protracted negotiations that first came to light in February, when the Western Australian great aired his grievances over pay on national radio, CA and Lillee have parted ways. But CA have said Lillee would be welcomed back into fold as a consultant coach should he change his stance on remuneration.

“Unfortunately Dennis Lillee didn’t accept Cricket Australia’s offer to renew his contract. He is a great of the game and the door will always be open to him if he wants to return and be involved in any way. We’ve made a point in recent times of being open to bringing in coaching consultants when required," a statement from a CA spokesperson read.

Lillee was involved in rejuvenating the career of Mitchell Johnson in Perth and had been working closely with 20-year-old prodigy Pat Cummins and allrounder James Faulkner.

Lillee told SEN Radio in February that he was "taking a stance" with CA over his pay, claiming the governing body was "quibbling over an increase".

"Out of the goodness of my heart I am still in touch with him (Cummins), he's a good lad and he's got a big future, but I'm over that, I've got other work to do. Not particularly Pat but then everyone comes on board and Cricket Australia think 'here he is, he'll just continue to do it anyway'. So I'm taking a stance," Lillee said on SEN.

CA's stance at the time was that "Dennis is clearly a great asset to Australian cricket and we want to ensure he stays involved with the game", however that has not proved possible.

Lillee's exit comes in the same week Cricket Australia announced Craig McDermott had extended his contract until 2016 and will take on more responsibility as Australia's full-time bowling coach.

CA had also employed Shane Warne to work with Australia's T20 squad in the lead up to the World T20 while Mike Hussey was hired to work as a consultant batting coach at Brisbane's National Cricket Centre.
