Another DRS blunder for England at MCG

Another failure to review cost England after Dawid Malan was given out lbw on day three

England have made another appalling DRS blunder in the fourth Magellan Ashes Test, with Alastair Cook again proving a bad source of advice.

The visitors fell to 4-246 shortly before lunch on Thursday when Dawid Malan was trapped lbw on 14 by Josh Hazlewood.

A thick edge was detected on the Hotspot technology before the ball ricocheted onto Malan's pads, something that would have ensured his survival had he reviewed the decision.

England No.3 James Vince was dismissed in virtually identical circumstances on Wednesday, although his edge onto his pads appeared much fainter than Malan's.

Aussies get a break as Vince doesn't review

Like Malan, Vince was trapped lbw by Hazlewood and sent on his way after consulting with veteran opener Cook at the non-striker's end.

"This is weird because Vince, there was a feeling that Vince might have nicked his as well," former Australian captain Ian Chappell said in the Nine Network commentary box.

"And he didn't review it. That looks, well, to all intents and purposes as though he's inside-edged it.

"Why did he bother to go down and talk to Alastair Cook? He should have immediately reviewed it himself.

"The only thing I can think of is if the thicker bats make it harder to detect an edge. Through my career I did not - not once - not know that I nicked it."

England paceman Stuart Broad said on Wednesday that Vince had been completely unaware of having nicked his wicket ball and was taken aback when he saw replays of the dismissal.
