Broad in doubt for first Test

England speedster the latest quick to enter the injury ward as the first Test of the English summer looms

Stuart Broad is the latest England fast bowler to be in doubt for the first Test against South Africa after sustaining a heel injury in Nottinghamshire’s County Championship win over Leicestershire.

Broad bowled only one over on Wednesday at Trent Bridge before leaving the field complaining of pain in his left foot.

Scans revealed no major issue but the 30-year-old will not take any risks with England’s first Test against the Proteas at Lord’s only two weeks away.

"Stuart had a bit of pain in his heel, he's had it for a while," said Nottinghamshire coach Peter Moores.

"If the situation had been different, he could have pushed on through it but there was no need to, so he came off and we'll monitor it and look after him."

Broad has managed the issue for the past few years and is expected to share the new ball with Australia tearaway James Pattinson when Nottinghamshire face Surrey in the domestic 50-over final at Lord's next weekend.

Quick Single: Pattinson set for Lord's farewell

England are already dealing with the prospect of entering the Test series without Chris Woakes, who was ruled out of the recent Champions Trophy with a side strain he suffered in the opening clash against Bangladesh.

Veteran seamer James Anderson is also looking to prove his fitness as he recovers from a groin strain he picked up playing for Lancashire against Yorkshire last month.

Anderson bowled 28 overs for 2-89 in the first innings in his comeback match against Hampshire at Old Trafford this week before ripping apart the visitors with a 3-5 from eight overs, including the wicket of former Australia one-day international captain George Bailey lbw for 10.

It was sweet revenge for Anderson after Bailey flayed England’s most prolific Test wicket-taker during his first-innings 127.
