England rest Root as Ashes stars take up battle against reigning world champions

Five Ashes heroes have been named in England’s 13-man one-day international squad for the five-match series against Australia.

Allrounder Moeen Ali returns to the ODI side alongside fellow Ashes winners Jos Buttler, Steven Finn, Ben Stokes and Mark Wood.

Middlesex batsman Eoin Morgan will captain both the ODI and T20 teams as England look to harness the Test side’s momentum following the 3-2 Ashes victory.

Compton-Miller medallist Joe Root has been rested from the limited-overs fixtures which begin with a T20 international in Cardiff on August 31.

“We have made some significant progress in our limited overs cricket this summer and the next six games allow these players to continue testing themselves against one of the very best sides in the world,” England National Selector James Whitaker said.

“This is primarily a young group of players and the next three weeks will provide them with valuable experience as we continue to identify players who can take our limited overs cricket forward over the next four years.

“On behalf of the selectors I would like to wish Eoin Morgan and Trevor Bayliss all the very best for what I’m sure will be a very competitive and entertaining series.”

Following a disastrous World Cup performance in Australia and New Zealand earlier this year, England’s selectors made significant changes to the limited-overs teams and started by dropping a number of their aging stars.

Veterans James Anderson, Stuart Broad and Ian Bell were all axed as the selection panel opted for youth as they build towards a home World Cup in 2019.

The move was an immediate hit, with Morgan’s men defeating World Cup runners-up New Zealand earlier this winter in a thrilling series which finished 3-2.

During the series England scored 400 for the first time in the 50-over format, while Buttler scored a 61-ball century in Birmingham, breaking his own record for the fastest ODI ton for England.

Jonny Bairstow, another Ashes winner and man-of-the-match in the series decider against the Black Caps, was overlooked, with only Essex left-arm fast bowler Reece Topley (T20 only) the only uncapped player in either squad.

The series will be the first time Australia have played ODI cricket since winning their fifth World Cup in March this year, and will Steve Smith’s first campaign as the full-time one-day skipper.
