Read reaches 1000 dismissals

Nottinghamshire wicketkeeper first to reach milestone since 1997

Former England player Chris Read has become the first wicketkeeper in 18 years to take 1000 first-class dismissals, reaching the milestone in the County Championship on Friday.

The Nottinghamshire captain, who played 15 Tests between 1999 and 2007, passed the 1000-mark when he caught Durham counterpart Paul Collingwood.

Collingwood departed for six as Durham slumped to a 52-run defeat, but the former England one-day captain secured a record of his own on Friday, becoming the first batsman to pass 10,000 first-class runs for Durham.

Read, who was playing his 319th first-class match, became the 26th player in history to reach 1000 dismissals and the first to do so since Jack Russell managed the feat for Gloucestershire in 1997.

Read had entered the game on 998 dismissals, and took a catch in the first innings before passing the milestone during Durham’s second dig.

Read, who now has 950 first-class catches to go with 50 stumpings, said he celebrated a little harder than usual after taking the milestone catch.

“Given that he [Collingwood] was the captain and given the run that we were on at the time, it was a big wicket, so I did chuck the ball a little higher and the reaction of all my teammates was brilliant,” Read told BBC Radio Nottingham.

"They all came and gave me a big hug which was great.

"The guard of honour at the end was a bit emotional, I wasn't expecting that."

His record matched after 18 years, former England ‘keeper Russell was quick to congratulate Read.

“I’d just like to congratulate him on all that he’s achieved and urge him to keep going for as long as he can and hope there’s plenty more dismissals to come in the future,” Russell said.

“His game has flourished over the years and he has become one of the best wicketkeepers around, add that to his exceptional batting and his captaincy and he has become a brilliant, fully-rounded cricketer.”

The record for most dismissals is held by former England and Derbyshire keeper Bob Taylor, who took a total of 1473 catches and 176 stumpings across his 639-match first-class career.

Durham were bowled out for 162 chasing 215, while Nottinghamshire’s Brett Hutton finished with 10 wickets for the match.

"We aren't scoring enough runs, it has been a habit all season,” Collingwood told BBC Radio Newcastle.

"Even on this one, which I thought was one of the best cricket pitches you could play on, we were well short.

"I thought Nottinghamshire probably wanted it a little more than us and showed a lot of skill to turn that game around."
