By the numbers: Lord's Test day one

Pakistan skipper Misbah-ul-Haq leads the way with some unique numbers from his defiant ton at Lord's

7 – The number of consecutive toss wins for Pakistan in Tests, their longest successful coin-contest streak ever. All these tosses have been won by Misbah-ul-Haq – three against Sri Lanka and four against England. With it he has also equaled Pakistan’s record for most consecutive toss wins by a captain (Intikhab Alam won seven on the trot as well between 1973 and 1974).

2071 – The number of days since Pakistan have not changed a captain in Tests, the longest period in the country’s history without a change in leadership beating the tenure of their first ever captain Abdul Hafeez Kardar who held the position for 1987 days between 1952 and 1958. Misbah since appointment as captain in November 2010 has just missed one game – against Sri Lanka at Galle in 2012 due to the slow over rate in the ODI series of that tour. If he had not missed it the Lord’s Test would have been his 44th consecutive match as captain.

10 – The number of push-ups Misbah did to celebrate his name on the Lord’s honour board. After the play he told media that he did it because he made a promise to the army guys in Abbottabad where Pakistan had a physical training camp before coming to England that he would do ten push-ups whenever he scores a hundred just as a reminder that he was there.

Ten is also the number of hundreds he has accumulated in Tests. It is pertinent to mention here that he has never scored a century in a losing cause. Of his nine hundreds prior to this one, six resulted in wins and three in draws.

2- The number of Pakistan batsmen who have scored hundred in their very first Test in England. Misbah, 110 not out off 179 balls, became just the second one to do so. The first was Zaheer Abbas - 274 against England in Birmingham in 1971. It was also Zaheer’s maiden Test hundred.

42 – The age of Misbah-ul-Haq. He (42 years and 47 days) is now the oldest captain to score a hundred in Tests beating the record of Australia’s Bob Simpson who was 41 years and 360 days old when he scored 100 off 200 balls against India at Adelaide in 1978.

Misbah is also the sixth oldest batsman in history to score a century in Tests and the oldest since England’s Patsy Hendern (45 years and 151 days) against Australia at Manchester in 1934.

4 – The number of wickets Chris Woakes took on the opening day, the most he has taken in an innings in his budding career. Woakes’ previous best was 3-9 against Sri Lanka at Chester-le-Street couple of months ago.

8 – The number of hundred in Tests by Misbah when playing as captain, the most by anyone from Pakistan going past Inzamam-ul-Haq’s tally of seven hundreds as skipper.

Eight is also the number of Pakistan batsmen who have scored hundred at Lord’s. The seven before Misbah were Mohammad Yousuf (2006), Inzamam-ul-Haq (1996), Mohsin Khan (1982), Hanif Mohammad (1967), Nasim-ul-Ghani and Javed Barki (1962).

110 – The number of runs Misbah accumulated on the opening day, the most he has produced in a day’s play in his 62 Tests career. The previous highest was 108 on the third day of the Kolkata Test against India in 2007.

148 – The fifth wicket stand between Asad Shafiq and Misbah at Lord’s, Pakistan’s highest partnership in last five Tests in England. On their previous, in the whole series, they just put one 100-run stand that was 115 between Saeed Ajmal and Zulqarnain Haider for thr eighth wicket at Edgbaston and this time they produced a hundred-partnership in the very first innings of the series.

97.43 – Misbah’s batting Strike Rate against Moeen Ali in his Test career. He has scored 114 runs off 117 balls at a Strike Rate of 97.43 off him with the help of 13 fours and 2 sixes and been dismissed just once by him. Of his 114 runs, 82 runs came in the series in the UAE in 2015.
