Root underlined his standing as one of the world's finest young batsmen with his magnificent 254 at Old Trafford that saw England hit back strongly after their shock defeat at Lord's.

At the insistence of coach Trevor Bayliss, the 25-year-old moved up to first drop earlier this northern summer – following the departure of Nick Compton - and the move has paid dividends, with his 512 runs against Pakistan making him the series' leading run-scorer.

Younis bounces back with masterful 218 at The Oval

Younis' heroics put Pakistan in control

Some had written off Younis Khan before the final Test against England, with the 38-year-old's highest score of the series to that date 33 at Lord's. Then he produced a masterclass at The Oval to remove all doubts about his short-term future. Crucially, it also put Pakistan in prime position to win the Test – an opportunity they seized to draw the series 2-2.
