Anderson, Root, Cook climb in ICC rankings

Grenada victory sees Joe Root break into the top five in the Test batting charts for the first time

England’s second Test victory over the West Indies has seen in-form trio James Anderson, Joe Root and Gary Ballance leap up the official player rankings, while skipper Alastair Cook also improved his standing.

Anderson’s figures of 2-47 and 4-43 in the nine-wicket win saw him jump three places in the ICC Test rankings to sit alongside Australian quick Ryan Harris in second position, equalling his previous career-best standing.

Quick single: England claim second Test win

It was apt reward for Anderson, whose bowling in the second innings triggered a collapse which saw the West Indies lose eight wickets for 83 runs.

Root, named player of the match for his 182 not out, jumped five places to sit in fifth spot.

His climb also marks a career best for the right-hander, who has been in sublime form with four hundreds in his last 10 matches, each innings remaining undefeated.

Quick single: What we learned from England’s Test win

Ballance, who entered the series on a run of poor form but turned it around with a ton in the first Test before scores of 77 and 81 not out in the second match, jumped five places to 17th in the rankings.

Cook, whose Test century drought has extended to 19 matches, moved two places to 27th following knocks of 76 and 59 not out.

The England skipper dropped four places earlier this month after only scoring 24 runs in two innings in the first Test.

Quick single: Captain not cooked yet, says Hussain

Cook has gone more than 700 days without a Test hundred.

In that period, he has played 35 innings, making it the second-longest stretch without posting three figures by an England captain.

For West Indies, Marlon Samuels moved three places to 28th after his century, while Darren Bravo (up two places to 32nd) and Kraigg Brathwaite (up eight spots to 34th) were also rewarded for good performances with the bat.

Sri Lanka’s Kumar Sangakkara remained on top of the Test batting charts, ahead of AB de Villiers and Hashim Amla, while Dale Steyn retained the No.1 bowling rank.
