ICC fine Morgan for slow over-rate

England skipper cops fine after the tourists took too long complete bowling innings in high-scoring second ODI against India

England captain Eoin Morgan lost his first series back in charge of England’s one-day side on Thursday and has now lost 20 per cent of his match fee, after the International Cricket Council fined him for a slow over rate during the thrilling second one-day international against India in Cuttack.

Morgan pleaded guilty to the charge laid by match referee Andy Pycroft after England were found to be one over short of its target when time allowances were taken into consideration during India’s batting innings.

The rest of the England XI were also fined 10 per cent of their match fees, as per the ICC code of conduct. Morgan accepted the sanction and there was no need for a formal hearing.

India took an unassailable 2-0 series lead in the three-match ODI series on Thursday, defeating England by 15 runs despite a superb century from Morgan.

Morgan departed Australia for India earlier this month after the Sydney Thunder import, in his final match for the tournament, struck a last-ball match-winning six to keep his side’s KFC Big Bash League finals hopes alive.

The Thunder have since been eliminated following their loss to the Adelaide Strikers on Wednesday.

The Irishman struck 159 runs at 39.75 in his five matches for the Thunder in BBL|06, finishing as the side’s second-leading run scorer despite missing their final three games.

Morgan made headlines late last year after pulling out of England’s tour of Bangladesh due to security concerns.

But he resumed his post as captain of England’s limited-overs side for their ODI and T20 International-leg of their tour of India.
