Who are the up-and-comers knocking on the door for Test selection? Some well-known names give their assessment of some Baggy Green aspirants

Sam Whiteman, Hilton Cartwright and Pete Handscomb are among the domestic stars being tipped for big futures by the current crop of Aussie players.

Cricket.com.au asked the Australian players to share their uncapped up-and-comers to watch in Test cricket, and while some opted to look to the far, distant future – George Bailey nominating Shaun Marsh's infant son Austin – some of the most exciting names on the domestic scene have been predicted to do great things in the Baggy Green.

Here are the rising stars the Aussies think you should look out for:

Nic Maddinson (NSW, 24, batsman)

Nominated by: Peter Nevill

Matador Cup best so far: 8 v CA XI

Nevill says: "I just think he’s incredibly talented and I think he’s been progressing over the last few years and really getting to understand his game even better. He’s got all the ingredients to be a hell of an Australian player. You’ve seen that in Sheffield Shield cricket that he’s able to (switch formats) and so he's someone I think has a big future in Test cricket.”

Cameron Bancroft (WA, 23, batsman)

Nominated by: Adam Voges

Matador Cup best so far: 65 not out v CA XI

Voges says: “I think Cameron Bancroft will play a lot of cricket for Australia, in which form I'm not too sure yet, but probably Test cricket. Technically and mentally he's got the game to do it and I think he's just starting to find some consistency in domestic cricket. If anyone works harder than him then I'm not sure who they are, so I think he’ll get there. His work ethic is second to none.

Sam Whiteman (WA, 24, wicketkeeper-batsman)

Nominated by: Mitch Marsh

Matador Cup best so far: 4 v SA

Marsh says: "I think he's got all the credentials to be a Test match 'keeper for Australia. Obviously Nevill’s a great keeper and he’ll be there for a long time but I think in the future years you'll definitely see Sam Whiteman play cricket for Australia. He's a very good batsman (too), he's won plenty of games for Western Australia already at a young age and he’s maturing into a very good player for us.

Hilton Cartwright (WA, 24, allrounder)

Nominated by: Nathan Coulter-Nile

Matador Cup best so far: 31 and 2/26 v SA

Coulter-Nile says: "I think he's a very good player, he's got a long way to go, but if he does well then I'm sure he’ll progress further. He's a bit like Mitch Marsh, he hits the ball really hard and he’s just quite accurate and probing with his bowling, just picks up those wickets when you need them."

Cartwright creams half-century

Peter Handscomb (Vic, 25, wicketkeeper-batsman)

Nominated by: James Faulkner, Scott Boland

Matador Cup best so far: 43 v SA

Faulkner says: "He can score everywhere and he can play spin as well, he can use his feet. He's a good puller, good cutter, good driver. Catches well, got beautiful hands."

Boland says: "I think he’s not far away now, he had a couple of really good Shield seasons in a row, so I think he's knocking on the door and once he gets opportunity to play Test cricket I think he will take it with both hands and do really well. He knows when he can attack and when he has to defend."

Handscomb tons up for Australia A

Chris Tremain (Vic, 25, fast bowler)

Nominated by: Matthew Wade

Matador Cup best so far: Tremain is currently in South Africa representing Australia.

Wade says: "Chris Tremain from Victoria, he's bowling the house down at the moment, he's on the ODI tour of South Africa, so he's one for Test cricket we’ll be looking at pretty closely."

Tremain rips through India A

Marcus Stoinis (Vic, 27, allrounder)

Nominated by: John Hastings

Matador Cup best so far: 59 not out and 1/21 v SA

Hastings says: "I think Marcus Stoinis has the game to make it to the next level, I think if he works on his bowling a little bit, gets a bit more consistent in the areas that you need to be to play Test cricket. I think he could be a real force cause he's got a very, very good technique, he can bat anywhere in the top six and he can probably bowl second or third change, so I think he could have a big future."
