Du Plessis exits IPL with finger injury

South African will be out of action for six weeks after breaking finger playing for Rising Pune Supergiants in India

Rising Pune Supergiants have been dealt another major blow with South African international Faf du Plessis ruled out of the tournament with injury.

Du Plessis tweeted the bad news, confirming his season was over after sustaining a broken finger.

The Proteas T20 captain leaves the subcontinent as Pune's second leading run-scorer, posting 206 runs at 34.33 with two half-centuries.

Du Plessis joins teammate Kevin Pietersen in the injury ward after ex-England batsman tore his calf muscle in the Supergiants' loss to Royal Challengers Bangalore last Friday.

Quick Single: Pietersen out of IPL

Pietersen suffered the injury attempting a quick run from his first ball, but wheeled around in pain and was carried off by the Pune medical staff.

Pietersen is expected to be out of action until November, just in time for his third stint with the Melbourne Stars in the KFC Big Bash League.

Australia batsman Usman Khawaja could replace one of Pietersen or Du Plessis after Pune coach Stephen Fleming said his side was looking at the elegant left-hander.

Quick Single: Khawaja in line for IPL stint

"He (Khawaja) is a guy we are surely looking at," Fleming said after the two-wicket loss to Kolkata on Sunday.

"There is a shortlist we are working through so looking at availability and Visas and the likes, but he is certainly a guy we are interested in."
