Johnson, Hazlewood to miss Bangladesh Tests: report

Aussie fast-bowling duo reportedly to be rested for two-match series against Tigers

Australia's pace spearhead Mitchell Johnson and newcomer Josh Hazlewood are set to be rested for the upcoming two-Test series against Bangladesh in October, according to a report from Fairfax Media.

The report stated that the pair, who have each played a significant role in Australia's Test and ODI fortunes over the past nine months, would miss the series with an eye to carefully managing their bowling workloads ahead of an action-packed summer.

That summer includes three Tests against New Zealand, three against West Indies, a five-match home ODI series against India and two more Tests in New Zealand, running through until the end of February.

"The selectors won't meet to discuss the tour of Bangladesh for a couple of weeks," Pat Howard, CA's executive general manager of team performance, told Fairfax.

"There's some important consideration that needs to be given to managing our fast bowlers, not just in Bangladesh, but the full 10-Test season, and that will be part of the discussion.

"Mitchell Johnson and Josh Hazlewood are two players that have had heavy workloads and need to be managed carefully if we are to give them the best chance of success throughout that entire period.

"Neither player has had a pre-season to prepare for the Australian summer and we think that's particularly important."

Australia's home Test summer begins on November 5 at the Gabba, just over a fortnight after the second Test in Bangladesh is scheduled to finish.

Between those times, the Bupa Sheffield Shield gets underway with a full round of action from October 27.

The absence of Hazlewood, who missed the final Ashes Test as he recovered from "niggling problems", and Johnson would open the door for Peter Siddle to continue his impressive renaissance as a Test bowler after the Victorian took six wickets and bowled with immaculate control as Hazlewood's replacement at The Oval last month.

It could also see the recall of either Pat Cummins or James Pattinson, both of whom have impressed on the international stage and are desperate to force their way back into Baggy Green.

The nature of the subcontinent however, could see the selection of two spinners in Australia's XI, with the likes of Fawad Ahmed, Ashton Agar and Steve O'Keefe likely to fight out the right to join leading tweaker Nathan Lyon.
