Fawad's emphatic statement to Vics

Spinner dominates grade cricket after being cut from Bushrangers' Matador Cup squad

Fawad Ahmed has made an emphatic statement in Melbourne grade cricket after being left out of Victoria's Matador BBQs One-Day Cup squad, snaring 3-9 in a match for Melbourne University.

Fawad recorded 57 dot balls from his 10 overs against Monash Tigers in Victorian Premier Cricket on Saturday, with four of the runs the result of overthrows.

The leg-spinner was dropped from the Commonwealth Bank Bushrangers' 14-man squad after the return of Bangladesh Test squad members Glenn Maxwell and Peter Siddle.

With Maxwell's off-spin and the left-arm orthodox of Jon Holland already at their disposal, the Victorians believed their spin stocks were adequately covered for the three-week tournament.

Melbourne University coach Kim Littlejohn said Fawad - who travelled to the Caribbean and the UK with the Australian Test squad earlier this year but was not picked for the tour of Bangladesh – felt he had a point to prove.

"He was obviously keen to make a statement, he believes he should be in the one-day side," Littlejohn told News Corp.

"He felt the best way to do that was to go out and perform. He turned the ball and the batsmen didn't have too many answers on how to play him."

Fawad has now conceded just 25 runs from 20 overs in his first two matches for Melbourne University this season, having taken 2-16 against Footscray-Edgewater last week.

When the Bushrangers' revised Matador Cup squad was announced, chairman of selectors Andrew Lynch said Fawad was seen as a vital cog in the reigning Sheffield Shield champion's four-day outfit.

"We still see Fawad as a key wicket-taker for the Bushrangers in first-class cricket, as evidenced by his record tally last season," Lynch said.

"He will now return to Melbourne to get ready for the Sheffield Shield season, which begins in four weeks, by getting vital red-ball practice, with a Toyota Futures League fixture in Perth on October 19 also an option," Lynch said.

Fawad enjoyed a brilliant Shield season in 2014-15, collecting 48 scalps including an eight-wicket haul in the final.

Meanwhile, in Tasmania, highly-rated young batsman Jordan Silk has turned out for his first match since withdrawing from contention for the Tasmanian Tigers Matador Cup squad citing personal issues.

Silk is playing for North Hobart in the Cricket Tasmania Premier League opening T20 fixtures this weekend, scoring 33 opening the batting against Lindisfarne on Saturday and is in action again on Sunday against South Hobart-Sandy Bay.

Former Test bowler Ben Hilfenhaus also made a return from a hamstring injury, taking 1-17 of 3.3 overs for University.
