Grassroots to get coaching boost

For the first time ever, Cricket Australia will offer free coaching this season

Aspiring cricket coaches around the country are set to benefit from free Community coaching courses this summer, Cricket Australia today announced.

The Level 1 courses, usually priced at $120 per person, will allow more than 3,000 parents and volunteers the opportunity to refine their coaching skills with a focus on junior cricket.

Accredited by the Australian Sports Commission and backed by cricket's global governing body, the International Cricket Council, all courses will be run by trained Cricket Australia staff throughout the 2017-18 season.

"Grassroots cricket is the lifeblood of cricket in Australia, and we are committed to investing accordingly at this level of the game. Whilst some associations have been supporting coaches to obtain accreditation, the chance to approach this nationally and provide the opportunity across Australia was important." said Belinda Clark, the former Australia captain and CA's Head of Junior Cricket.

"To be able to work with the Coaching department to offer the Community coaching course free of charge across the country is a significant part of our commitment. We hope this initiative encourages more Australians to get involved in coaching.

"We want all Australian cricket participants to have an enjoyable and safe experience, and ensuring our grassroots coaches have the training and resources to be able to provide this is important.

"Australian cricket clubs rely on their volunteers - and their coaches - to devote their time to the game. It’s where all our current male and female cricketers have developed their skills. It’s vitally important for us to support these volunteers to retain players at all levels of competition, to help drive participation in our great game and produce future Australian stars in the years to come."

People can register for the free course by signing up online at the Cricket Australia Coaching website, completing an online Introduction to Cricket course and selecting a course in their region.
